Its county seat is Livingston. Its name is in honor of General Thomas Sumter of South Carolina. History Sumter County was established on December 18, 1832. From 1797 to 1832, Sumter County was part of the Choctaw Nation, which was made up of four main villages. The first settlers in Sumter County were French explorers who had come north from Mobile. They built and settled at Fort Tombecbee, near the modern-day town of Epes. In 1830, with the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, the Choctaw Indians ceded the land that is now Sumter County to the government. Thomas Sumter
Thomas Sumter (August 14, 1734June 1, 1832) was a soldier in the Colony of Virginia militia; a brigadier general in the South Carolina militia during the American Revolution, a planter, and a politician. After the United States gained independence, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives and to the United States Senate, where he served from 1801 to 1810, when he retired. Sumter was nicknamed the "Fighting Gamecock" for his fierce fighting style against British soldiers after they burned down his house during the Revolution. Early life Thomas Sumter was born in Hanover County in the Colony of Virginia. His father, William, was a miller and former indentured servant, while his mother, Patience, was a midwife. Most of Thomas Sumter's early years were spent tending livestock and helping his father at the mill, not in school. Interstate 59 (I-59) is an Interstate Highway located in the southeastern United States. It is a north–south route that spans from a junction with I-10 and I-12 at Slidell, Louisiana, to a junction with I-24 near Wildwood, Georgia. Greene County is a county located in the west central portion of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,730, the least populous county in Alabama. Its county seat is Eutaw. It was named in honor of Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene of Rhode Island. As of the 2020 census, the county's population was 81% African American, making it the fourth-most heavily black county by proportion in the United States, and the most black county among all counties located outside of the state of Mississippi. It is documented as one of the unhealthiest counties in the United States, with a population with an obesity percentage of 46.3 percent, the highest of any county in the state, and second to only Claiborne County in the western portion of neighboring Mississippi. Its county seat is Carrollton, located in the center of the county. State Route 116 (SR 116) is a state highway in Sumter County in the western part of the U.S. state of Alabama. Route description SR 116 begins at an intersection with SR 17 north of Emelle. The highway serves as a connecting route between the northern half of Sumter County and neighboring Greene County. State Route 39 (Alabama)
State Route 39 (SR 39) is a state highway in the western part of the U.S. state of Alabama. The southern terminus of the highway is at its intersection with U.S. Route 11 (US 11) near Livingston. The northern terminus of the highway is at its intersection with SR 14 at Clinton, an unincorporated community in western Greene County. Route description SR 39 is a rural, two-lane highway that serves as a connecting route between Livingston and western Greene County. From its southern terminus at US 11, the highway travels in a northerly direction. At Gainesville, it intersects, and serves as the eastern terminus of, SR 116. From Gainesville, the highway turns to the northeast, continuing this trajectory until it intersects SR 14 at Clinton.
