Summer Mile Stakes
The Summer Mile Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 7 furlongs and 213 yards (1,603 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July. History The event was formerly known as the Silver Trophy Stakes, and it used to be held at Lingfield Park. For a period it was a Listed race open to horses aged three or older, and it was contested over 7 furlongs and 140 yards. It was run as a handicap from 1993 to 1998. It was switched to Ascot and extended to a mile in 1999. The Silver Trophy Stakes was promoted to Group 3 level in 2003, and from this point it excluded three-year-olds. It returned to Lingfield when Ascot was closed for redevelopment in 2005. That year's edition was the first Group race in Britain run on a synthetic surface. Ascot Racecourse ("ascot" pronounced , often pronounced ) is a dual-purpose British racecourse, located in Ascot, Berkshire, England, which is used for thoroughbred horse racing. Ian Balding
Ian Balding (born 7 November 1938) is a retired British horse trainer. He is the son of the polo player and racehorse trainer Gerald Matthews Balding and the younger brother of trainer Toby Balding. Ian Balding was born in the US, but his family returned to the UK in 1945. He was educated at Marlborough College and Millfield school in Somerset. He went up to Christ's College, Cambridge, in 1959 to read Rural Estate Management, where he played Rugby for the university team, gaining his Blue in 1961 at full back. He started training in 1964. Kingsclere became his home at the age of 26 and it is here that earned his reputation as an internationally respected trainer. He principally trained horses for flat races, but did however bring Crystal Spirit to victory in 1991 at the Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle. Billy Newnes
William Anthony Paul Newnes (born Liverpool, 6 December 1959) is an Epsom Oaks winning jockey, best known for his connection with the horse Time Charter, on which he won the Oaks, Sun Chariot Stakes and Champion Stakes in 1982. He was also Champion Apprentice the same season, with 57 winners. Not long afterwards, in 1984, he was banned for three years for accepting £1,000 from professional gambler Harry Bardsley in return for information. After his return, he won the 1989 Greenham Stakes on Zayyani, but spent much of the 1990s riding in Germany, where he won the Deutsches Derby in 1992 on Pik Konig. Dean McKeown
Dean Russell McKeown (born 5 February 1960) is a retired British Thoroughbred horse racing jockey. He embarked on his professional career as a teenager, earning his first win in 1977. While never a Champion jockey, McKeown has won a number of important Conditions races in the United Kingdom including three editions of the Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket Racecourse. He also won the Ebor Handicap (2002) and Chester Cup (2003) aboard Hugs Dancer then in the fall of 2004 became the regular jockey for trainer Alan Swinbank where he became an integral part of the racing success of Collier Hill. Luca M. Cumani (born 7 April 1949, in Milan, Italy) is an Italian thoroughbred horse trainer and breeder. He trained at Bedford House Stables in Newmarket from 1976 to 2019. Markofdistinction (14 April 1986 – 1996) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He showed promise as a two-year-old in 1988 when he was an emphatic winner of his only start. In the following year his only win came in the Listed Silver Trophy although he ran well in several major races including the 2000 Guineas and the Sussex Stakes. He reached his peak as a four-year-old in 1990 when he won the Sandown Mile, Queen Anne Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Guy Harwood
Guy Harwood (born 10 June 1939) is a retired British racehorse trainer. Background Harwood was born in Pulborough, West Sussex, in 1939. His father, Wally made the family fortune with his garage business, founded in 1931. Harwood began riding at the age of 18 and won 40 point-to-point races and 14 National Hunt races over the next few years. Training career He began training horses in 1965 under permit, and took out a training licence in 1966, establishing the Coombelands racing stables. In the 1970s, Harwood developed his stable to become one of the most modern in Britain, introducing such innovations as artificial gallops, American-style barns and a computerised office system. He trained many winners there, including Dancing Brave, winner of the 1986 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and European Horse of the Year for 1986. Patrick James John Eddery (18 March 1952 – 10 November 2015) was an Irish flat racing jockey and trainer. He rode three winners of the Derby and was Champion Jockey on eleven occasions. He rode the winners of 4,632 British flat races, a figure exceeded only by Sir Gordon Richards. Background Eddery was born in Newbridge, County Kildare, less than 2 miles from the Curragh Racecourse, and his birth was registered in Dublin.
