Suman, Indiana
Suman was unincorporated community in Jackson Township, Porter County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. Old Suman Road is in the area. History An older variant name of the village was Sumanville. It was originally laid out in 1873 by Isaac C. B. Suman (1831-1911), who had served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 9th Indiana Infantry Regiment. A post office was established and operated until 1894. A justice of the peace sat at Sumanville. A nation-wide medical register and directory from 1886 reported the town's population as two-hundred. Suman was near the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line that ran through the area (which is now part of CSX Transportation Garrett Subdivision). A derailment took place outside of Suman station in 1923. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. There are several townships in Porter County, Indiana. Within each of the townships are several towns or cities or other type of named communities. There are many "lost" towns, a group of places whose names are still commonly used by county residents. Garrett Subdivision
The Garrett Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of Ohio and Indiana. The line runs from Deshler, Ohio, west to Willow Creek, Indiana (in Portage), along a former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) line. At its east end, just east of Deshler, the Garrett Subdivision becomes the Willard Subdivision. The line crosses the Toledo Subdivision at Deshler and ends at the junction with the Porter Subdivision and Barr Subdivision at Willow Creek. Baltimore And Ohio Railroad
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first common carrier railroad and the oldest railroad in the United States, with its first section opening in 1830. Merchants from Baltimore, which had benefited to some extent from the construction of the National Road early in the century, wanted to do business with settlers crossing the Appalachian Mountains. 9th Indiana Infantry Regiment
The 9th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment was a volunteer infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was organized on April 22, 1861, for three-months' service in Indianapolis. After being reorganized for three years' service in late August and early September 1861, the 9th took part in many major battles, including Shiloh, Stones River, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Kennesaw Mountain and the Siege of Atlanta.
