Sulphur Butterfly
Coliadinae, the sulphurs or yellows, are a subfamily of butterflies with about 300 described species. There are 36 species in North America, where they range from Mexico to northern Canada. In most species, males are easily distinguished from females. For example, in the genera ''Colias'' and ''Gonepteryx''), males exhibit brilliant UV reflections that the females lack. Systematics The Coliadinae can be arranged in the three traditional tribes and a basal lineage, with one genus of unclear placement. The taxa—including some selected species—are arranged here in the presumed phylogenetic sequence, from the most ancient lineages to the most modern ones:Brower (2006) Basal lineage * '' Kricogonia'' Reakirt, 1863 * '' Nathalis'' Boisduval, 836/small> Euremini * ''Terias'' Swainson, 1821 * '' Pyrisitia'' Butler, 1870 * '' Abaeis'' Hübner, 819/small> * ''Eurema'' Hübner, 819/small> – grass yellows * '' Leucidia'' Doubleday, 847/small> * ''Teriocolias'' Roeber 1 ... Nathalis Iole
''Nathalis iole'', the dainty sulphur or dwarf yellow, is a North American butterfly in the family Pieridae. Description This species is the smallest North American pierid. A rare population, known from Homestead (Smith et al., 1994), is said to have mostly white individuals. Some feel that the dainty sulphur is so unique among pierids, in shape and in several structural features, that it should belong in a separate subfamily. Its appearance is highly variable but a subset of distinctive features aid in identification. The forewings' elongated shape is distinctive. The upperside of the wings is yellow with the tip of the forewing being black. Black bars extend along the trailing edge of the forewing and the leading edge of the hindwing. Male dainty sulphurs have an oval scent patch (called an androconial spot) in each hindwing bar. The androconial spot is reddish orange but fades to pale yellow after death. The underside of the wings varies depending on the season. Sum ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Zerene Eurydice
''Zerene eurydice'', the California dogface butterfly, belongs to the family Pieridae and is a sister genus to ''Colias.'' ''The Zerene eurydice'' and the ''Colias'' both share the "characteristic of having yellow-orange and black wing coordination''."'' Additionally the,"''Colias'' and ''Zerene eurydice'' males have bright UV patterns on their wings."There are only two species of the ''Zerene'', the ''Zerene eurydice'', and the ''Zerene cesonia'', also known as the Southern dogface. A study that collected mitochondrial DNA from various ''Colias'' butterfly species found that ''Z. eurydice'' had decreased divergence from the ingroup, highlighting how closely related these two genera are.
