Sulița is a commune in Botoșani County, Western Moldavia, Romania. It is composed of three villages: Cheliș, Dracșani, and Sulița. The commune is situated in the Jijia Plain, at an altitude of , on the banks of the river Sitna and its left tributary, the river Burla. Jijia Plain
Jijia Plain () is a geographic area in northeast Romania, occupying most of Botoșani County and parts of Iași County. Despite the name, it is not a flatland, but a region dotted with hills, part of the Moldavian Plateau. In Romania sometimes it is also called the Moldavian Plain, however one should be warned that in Moldova the latter term is used as a synonym for the Bălți steppe together with the Middle Prut Valley, which have a relief and natural vegetation very similar to that of the Jijia Plain. The Jijia Plain has altitudes of , lower than the surrounding Suceava Plateau, Dniester Hills, and Bârlad Plateau. The surrounding hills are characterized by deep gorges, and the term plains is employed to denote the fact that the area in-between the hill formations is visibly leaner and less slanted. Origin of the name The name of the city probably has its origin in the name of a boyar family called ''Botaș'', whose name can be found in old records from the time of Prince Stephen the Great (late 15th century) as one of the most important families of Moldavia, records which trace it back to the 11th century. Cleopa Ilie
Saint Cleopa (Ilie) of Sihăstria (; 10 April 1912 – 2 December 1998) was an abbot of the . He was a well-known spiritual representative of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Archimandrite Cleopa was glorified as a saint by the Eastern Orthodox Church on July 12, 2024. His feast day is December 2, alongside saints Paisie (Olaru) of Sihăstria and Porphyrios of Kafsokalyvia. Biography Cleopa Ilie ( lay name: Constantin) was born in Sulița, Botoșani County to a family of peasants. He was the fifth of ten children born to Alexandru Ilie. He attended the primary school in his village. Afterwards, he was an apprentice for three years to the monk Paisie Olaru, who lived in seclusion at the . Together with his elder brother, Vasile, Ilie joined the community at Sihăstria Hermitage in December 1929.
