Seok, also spelled Suk, is a rare Korean family name held by about 56,500 South Koreans, as well as an element in some Korean given names. As a family name The family name Seok can be written with either of two hanja, one meaning "stone" (), and the other meaning "ancient" (). The former version is the more widespread of the two. The 2000 South Korean census found 46,066 people by this name. Of these, the great majority are members of the Gyeongju Seok clan and the Chungju (also called Hongju) Seok clan. The latter had a 2000 South Korean population of 9,544. The Gyeongju Seok clan claims descent from certain of the early rulers of Silla; the first Gyeongju Seok to sit on the throne was the fourth Silla king, Talhae. Cyril Suk III (born 29 January 1967) is a former professional tennis player. A doubles specialist, Suk won five Grand Slam titles, one men's doubles and four Grand Slam mixed doubles titles and 32 ATP Tour doubles titles during his career. Early life Suk was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, a member of a prominent Czech tennis family. His mother, Věra Suková, was a women's singles finalist at Wimbledon in 1962. Feliks Suk (December 30, 1845 in Petelinek near Blagovica, Slovenia – April 8, 1915 in Zagreb) was Croatian university professor and rector of the University of Zagreb. Jeannie Suk Gersen (born 1973) is a professor of law at Harvard Law School. Biography Suk attended Hunter College High School, graduating in 1991. In 1995, Suk received her B.A. in Literature from Yale University, and a D.Phil at St Hugh's College, Oxford in 1999, where she was a Marshall Scholar. Joey Suk (born 8 July 1990) is a Dutch professional football player as a midfielder for Karmiotissa. Suk has Dutch-Indonesian roots. Besides the Netherlands, he has played in Croatia. Josef Suk (4 January 1874 – 29 May 1935) was a Czech composer and violinist. He studied under Antonín Dvořák, whose daughter he married. Biography From a young age, Josef Suk (born in Křečovice, Bohemia) was deeply involved and well trained in music. He learned organ, violin, and piano from his father, Josef Suk Sr., and was trained further in violin by the Czech violinist Antonín Bennewitz. His theory studies were conducted with several other composers including Josef Bohuslav Foerster, Karel Knittl, and Karel Stecker. He later focused his writing on chamber works under the teachings of Hanuš Wihan. Despite extensive musical training, his musical skill was often said to be largely inherited. Josef Suk (8 August 1929 – 7 July 2011) was a Czech violinist, violist, chamber musician and conductor. In his home country he carried the title of National Artist. Youth and studies Josef Suk was born in Prague, the grandson of the composer and violinist Josef Suk, and great-grandson of the composer Antonín Dvořák. After finishing high school in 1945 he entered the Prague Conservatory (1945-1951), where his teachers were Jaroslav Kocián, Norbert Kubát and Karel Šnebergr. The most important of all his teachers was Jaroslav Kocián, who started teaching him privately when Suk was 7 years old.
