"Sugar and Spice" is a single by the band Madness, released on 3 August 2009. It is the third single from the album The Liberty of Norton Folgate and is the first ever Madness single to be released only digitally. The version of Sugar and Spice featured in the single release differs slightly from the version included in the album, as it has a different opening verse and words differ throughout the song. The B-side included in the release is the demo version of Sugar and Spice featuring keyboard player Mike Barson on vocals; it also includes an extra verse. This is the second time a Madness release has featured Mike Barson on vocals after a demo version of My Girl was released on the 12-inch version of "The Return of the Los Palmas 7" in 1981. The song was written by Mike Barson on the subject of his separation from his now ex-wife Sandra. In addition, an extended remix of the track Africa by Ashley Beedle is also included. The song was released as a single on 21 December 1979 and spent 10 weeks on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number 3. Cathal Joseph "Carl" Smyth (born 14 January 1959), also known as Chas Smash, is an English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His career spans more than 40 years. Smash came to prominence in the late 1970s as secondary vocalist, trumpet player and dancer for the English band Madness, with whom he was associated from their inception until 2014. ''The Liberty of Norton Folgate'' is the ninth studio album by the British band Madness, released on 18 May 2009. The band worked on the album for close to three years and it was their first album of new material since 1999's '' Wonderful''. Content The 10-minute title track recounts the social history of a corner of east London that until 1900 was controlled by St Paul's Cathedral. As a "liberty" it was not legally independent, but the rights of the Crown over the land had been waived. A shortened version of the track "The Liberty of Norton Folgate" was made available on YouTube in mid May 2008. In December a boxset of the album was offered for pre-order on the Madness website; those who ordered were entitled to a digital download of the album on 20 December.
