Suffs (musical)
''Suffs'' is a stage musical with a book, music, and lyrics by Shaina Taub, based on suffragists and their American women's suffrage movement. It premiered Off-Broadway at The Public Theater in April 2022. Production history The musical was initially going to open its world premiere production at The Public Theater on April 6, 2022, but the preview the night before as well as the opening night were cancelled due to a large number of positive COVID-19 cases among the cast. It began previews on March 13 and was initially announced to run until April 24, but has been extended three times: first to May 1, then to May 15, and most recently to May 29. Shaina Taub
Shaina Taub is an American singer, composer and musician. Biography Taub graduated from New York University Tisch School of the Arts. Taub composed and starred in three adaptations of Shakespeare plays for The Public Theater's Public Works program: ''Twelfth Night'' in both 2016 and 2018 and ''As You Like It'' in 2017 Taub has appeared Off-Broadway in the revival of the revue show '' Old Hats'' in 2016, ''Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812'' (2013), and ''Hadestown'' (2016). She played the role of Emma Goldman in the ''Ragtime on Ellis Island'' concert. She performs at Joe's Pub in Manhattan monthly. Alongside Elton John on music, Taub penned the lyrics for the upcoming musical adaptation of '' The Devil Wears Prada'', based on Lauren Weisberger's novel of the same name. ''Shoulder to Shoulder'' is a 1974 BBC television serial and book relating the history of the women's suffrage movement, both edited by Midge Mackenzie. The drama series grew out of discussions between Mackenzie and the actress and singer Georgia Brown, who was dissatisfied at the lack of decent roles for women in TV drama. Brown enlisted the producer Verity Lambert in the project she and Mackenzie were devising to dramatise the struggle for women's suffrage, and the three women presented the idea to the BBC, which gave approval for the series. Originally they had hoped to use only female script writers but this proved impracticable. Alice Stokes Paul (January 11, 1885 – July 9, 1977) was an American Quaker, suffragist, feminist, and women's rights activist, and one of the main leaders and strategists of the campaign for the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits sex discrimination in the right to vote. Inez Milholland
Inez Milholland Boissevain (August 6, 1886 – November 25, 1916) was a leading American suffragist, lawyer, and peace activist. From her college days at Vassar, she campaigned aggressively for women’s rights as the principal issue of a wide-ranging socialist agenda. In 1913, she led the dramatic Woman Suffrage Procession on horseback in advance of President Woodrow Wilson's inauguration, though she had to accept that her beauty earned her more notice than her politics. She was also a labour lawyer and a war correspondent, as well as a high-profile New Woman of the age, with her avant-garde lifestyle and belief in free love. María Adelina Isabel Emilia "Nina" Otero-Warren (October 23, 1881 – January 3, 1965) was a woman's suffragist, educator, and politician in the United States. Otero-Warren created a legacy of civil service through her work in education, politics, and public health.
