Sue Burke
Sue Burke (born 1955) is an American writer and translator. She has written the science fiction novel '' Semiosis'' (2018) and its sequel, ''Interference'' (2019). ''Semiosis'' attracted favorable attention and acclaim and appeared on numerous lists of the best books of 2018. Awards In 2017, Burke received the Alicia Gordon Award for Word Artistry in Translation from the American Translators Association for her English translation of an excerpt from Joseph de la Vega’s ''Confusión de confusiones'', written in Spanish in 1688. The book, the first analysis of stock markets ever written, was a commission from Bolsas y Mercados Españoles for an institutional gift. Personal life Burke grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin. She moved with her husband, a trilingual businessman, to Madrid, Spain, in December 1999. ''Semiosis'' is a 2018 science fiction novel by American writer and translator Sue Burke. It is her debut novel and is the first book of her ''Semiosis Duology'' series. It was first published in February 2018 in the United States by Tor Books, and in August 2018 in the United Kingdom by HarperVoyager. The book was translated into French by Florence Bury, and published in France in September 2019 by Albin Michel. ''Semiosis'' is about colonists starting a new life on the planet Pax and their alliances with sentient indigenous plant species. The title of the book refers to semiosis, a communicative process using signs. It was shortlisted for the 2019 Arthur C. Clarke Award, the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel, the Kitschies Golden Tentacle for Best Debut Novel, and the Locus Award for Best First Novel. Garci Rodríguez De Montalvo
Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo (; c. 1450 – 1505) was a Castilian author who arranged the modern version of the chivalric romance '' Amadis of Gaul'', originally written in three books in the 14th century by an unknown author. Montalvo incorporated a fourth book in the original series, and followed it with a sequel, ''Las sergas de Esplandián''. It is the sequel that Montalvo is most often noted for, not for the book itself, but because within the book he coined the word ''California''. Montalvo is known to have been referred to by several other names, including; Garci Ordóñez de Montalvo, García Gutiérrez de Montalvo and García de Montalvo el Viejo. Biography Montalvo was born in Medina del Campo in the Province of Valladolid, Spain. He came from an influential family, belonging to the Pollino lineage, one of the seven who dominated Medina's council policy. ''Amadís de Gaula'' (in English ''Amadis of Gaul'') ( es, Amadís de Gaula, links=no, ); pt, Amadis de Gaula, links=no, ) is a Spanish landmark work among the chivalric romances which were in vogue in sixteenth-century, although its first version, much revised before printing, was written at the onset of the 14th century in an uncertain place of the Iberian Peninsula. The earliest surviving edition of the known text, by Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo (not Ordóñez de Montalvo), was printed in Zaragoza, Spain, in 1508, although almost certainly there were earlier printed editions, now lost.
