Sucedió En Jalisco (Los Cristeros)
''Sucedió en Jalisco (Los Cristeros)'' ("It Happened in Jalisco (The Cristeros)") is a 1947 Mexican film written and directed by Raúl de Anda based on the novel ''Los Cristeros'' by José Guadalupe de Anda. It stars Sara García and portrays the drama of a love triangle during the Cristero War. Legacy The filmmakers took a great risk in the making of the film as, despite the liberalism towards Catholicism in the post-Calles era, the Mexican government restricted coverage of the Cristero War and the conflict was largely covered up. A remake was made in 1972 which Raúl de Anda also directed. This version was based in part on the novel ''Sucedió en Jalisco'' by Jesús Goytortua. In light of the difference, Mexican cinema typically refers to the 1947 film by its alternative title ''Los Cristeros'' and the 1972 film by the proper title of ''Sucedió en Jalisco''. Sara García
Sara García Hidalgo (8 September 1895 – 21 November 1980) was a Mexican actress who made her biggest mark during the "Golden Age of Mexican cinema". During the 1940s and 1950s, she often played the part of a no-nonsense but lovable grandmother in numerous Mexican films. In later years, she played parts in Mexican telenovelas. García is remembered by her nickname, ''La Abuelita de México'' ("Mexico's Grandmother"). Life and career 1895–1917: Childhood Sara García Hidalgo was born on 8 September 1895 at Orizaba Veracruz. Her parents were Andalusian, Isidoro García Ruiz, an architect, and his wife Felipa Hidalgo de Ruiz in 1895. They moved from Havana, Cuba. to Veracruz. Her father was hired for various jobs there. Cristero War
The Cristero War ( es, Guerra Cristera), also known as the Cristero Rebellion or es, La Cristiada, label=none, italics=no , was a widespread struggle in central and western Mexico from 1 August 1926 to 21 June 1929 in response to the implementation of secularism, secularist and anti-clericalism, anticlerical articles of the Constitution of Mexico, 1917 Constitution. The rebellion was instigated as a response to an executive decree by Mexican President Plutarco Elías Calles to strictly enforce Article 130 of the Constitution, a decision known as Calles Law. Plutarco Elías Calles
Plutarco Elías Calles (25 September 1877 – 19 October 1945) was a general in the Mexican Revolution and a Sonoran politician, serving as President of Mexico from 1924 to 1928. The 1924 Calles presidential campaign was the first populist presidential campaign in Mexico's history, as he called for land redistribution and promised equal justice, expanded education, further labor rights, and democratic governance. After Calles' populist phase (1924–1926) he was committed to separating church from state (1926–1928), passing several anticlerical laws that resulted in the Cristero War. Calles is most noted for his founding of the Institutional Revolutionary Party in 1929, which ensured political stability in the wake of the assassination of president-elect Alvaro Obregón in 1928.
