Stéphane Mertens
Stéphane Mertens (born 14 May 1959 in Paris, France) is a Belgian former professional motorcycle road racer. Mertens made his Grand Prix debut in 1984, racing in the 250cc class. He also won the 1984 250cc Belgian Road Racing National Championship. He continued racing in the 250cc Grands Prix in 1985, 1986 and 1987. In he made the switch to racing production based motorcycles in the inaugural Superbike World Championship. Mertens raced for Bimota in 88 and 89, and stayed in the Superbike class until with his best result being a second-place finish behind Fred Merkel in the season, while riding for Honda. In 1995 he began to compete in the motorcycle FIM Endurance World Championship, winning that title in 1995 and 2002. The 24 Heures Motos (often called in English the 24 Hours of Le Mans motorcycle race) is a motorcycle endurance race held annually since 1978 on the Bugatti Circuit, Le Mans, Sarthe, France. The race is organized by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) and is part of the Endurance FIM World Championship. The Endurance World Championship (FIM EWC) is the premier worldwide endurance championship in motorcycle road racing. Fred Merkel (born September 28, 1962, in Stockton, California) is an American former professional motorcycle road racer and two-time Superbike World Champion. Motorcycle racing career In 1984 he teamed with Mike Baldwin to win the Suzuka 8 Hours endurance race. He is a three-time AMA Superbike Champion, winning in 1984/5 on the VF750 and 1986 on the VFR750F. He jointly holds the record for the most wins in a season with Mat Mladin. In the Superbike World Championship began, with Merkel entered on the RC30. He won the championship from Fabrizio Pirovano and Davide Tardozzi with two wins and three other podiums.
