Astene
Astene is a village and ''deelgemeente'' (sub-municipality) in the municipality of Deinze in the Belgium, Belgian province of East Flanders. The village is located along the Leie River and about south-west of Ghent. History The village was first mentioned in the 7th century as Athenneria. The etymology is unclear. The area has been inhabited since the Roman Empire, Roman era, and graves has been discovered dating between 50 and 150 Anno Domini, AD. The old parish church was located on the Kapelleberg, a dune near the Leie River, and was first mentioned in 1147. The village ''heerlijkheid'' (landed estate) used to belong to the Margraviate of Deinze, but the area also contained several other smaller ''heerlijkheden''. In 1582, during the Dutch Revolt, the village was destroyed except for three houses and the area was nearly depopulated. The men's sprint (or "scratch race") at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland was held from July 28 to July 31, 1952. There were 27 participants from 27 nations, with each nation limited to a single cyclist. The event was won by Enzo Sacchi of Italy, the nation's second consecutive victory in the men's sprint. Lionel Cox's silver was Australia's first medal in the event. Werner Potzernheim of Germany took bronze. Background This was the 10th appearance of the event, which has been held at every Summer Olympics except 1904 and 1912. None of the semifinalists from 1948 returned. After Japan declared in 1938 that it would be unable to host 1940 Olympics in Tokyo due to the ongoing Second Sino-Japanese War, Helsinki had been selected to host the 1940 Summer Olympics, which were then cancelled due to World War II. Tokyo eventually hosted the games in 1964. Helsinki is the northernmost city at which a summer Olympic Games have been held.
