Stutton Railway Station
Stutton railway station was a railway station in Stutton, North Yorkshire, on the Harrogate to Church Fenton Line. The station opened on 10 August 1847 and closed to passenger traffic on 30 June 1905. It remained open to goods traffic until it closed completely on 6 July 1964. The two-storey brick and sandstone station building was designed by George Townsend Andrews in the form of two side-by-side railway cottages. It was built on the ''up'' platform and is now used as a private residence. The roof of its single-storey northern extension was extended as a narrow canopy over the platform. Stutton, North Yorkshire
Stutton is a small village in the Selby District of North Yorkshire, England, a mile south-west of Tadcaster. It lies in the valley of the Cock Beck which discharges into the River Wharfe one mile to the east of the village. It is in the parliamentary constituency of Selby, the civil parish of Stutton with Hazlewood and ecclesiastical parish of Tadcaster. History It has an ancient history, likely founded by a Viking settler named Stufi in the late 9th century. The Domesday survey of 1086 records a mill, meadow and woodland. It remained a small hamlet until major residential development occurred in the 1960s and 70s. North Eastern Railway (United Kingdom)
The North Eastern Railway (NER) was an English railway company. It was incorporated in 1854 by the combination of several existing railway companies. Later, it was amalgamated with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway at the Grouping in 1923. Its main line survives to the present day as part of the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh. Unlike many other pre-Grouping companies the NER had a relatively compact territory, in which it had a near monopoly. That district extended through Yorkshire, County Durham and Northumberland, with outposts in Westmorland and Cumberland. The only company penetrating its territory was the Hull & Barnsley, which it absorbed shortly before the main grouping. Church Fenton railway station serves Church Fenton in North Yorkshire, England. It is on the former York and North Midland Railway main line from York to Normanton, just under from York. History The Y&NMR opened the first part of its route through the village (and on as far as Milford) on 29 May 1839, completing it the following year. On completion of a branch from there to Harrogate via Wetherby and Tadcaster by the Y&NM in 1848 a new station on a slightly different site gave it new importance and within two years it had become a calling point on the new East Coast Main Line (ECML) from York to London with the opening of a line from Burton Salmon to Knottingley (trains then continuing via Askern and Doncaster). Tadcaster railway station was on the Harrogate to Church Fenton Line in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England. History The station opened in 1848 as part of the Harrogate to Church Fenton Line of the York and North Midland Railway. Another line from Copmanthorpe to Cross Gates was authorised in 1846 and would have joined the line from Harrogate just north of Tadcaster station, but this project failed after the construction of the viaduct across the River Wharfe; earthworks marking the proposed line are still visible running eastward parallel with the A659 past what is now the Gallows Hill estate, but the only line laid was a short goods spur across the viaduct to a corn mill near the site of the modern-day Sainsbury's supermarket, adjacent to Tadcaster Bridge. George Townsend Andrews
George Townsend Andrews (19 December 1804 – 29 December 1855) was an English architect born in Exeter. He is noted for his buildings designed for George Hudson's railways, especially the York and North Midland Railway. Andrews' architect's practice in York did not confine itself to railway work, its other buildings including headquarters for two York-based banks and a number of churches. Life Andrews' roots lay in Jamaica and in London, but from the 1820s he was mainly in York. He was assistant to Peter Frederick Robinson. He won a Society of Arts premium in 1824. He was a council member of the Yorkshire Architectural Society, and Sheriff of York in 1846-47, during George Hudson's third term as mayor. In 1836 he was appointed a Fellow of the Institute of British Architects in London. He died in York on 29 December 1855. The Harrogate–Church Fenton line was a railway line opened by the York and North Midland Railway between 1847 and 1848 linking Harrogate and Church Fenton. History The Harrogate–Church Fenton line is a former railway line in North Yorkshire, which ran from Harrogate to Church Fenton. It was staked out by York and North Midland Railway in September 1845 and the line opened from Church Fenton to Spofforth on 10 August 1847.
