Sturgeon Point Light
The Sturgeon Point Light Station is a lighthouse on Lake Huron in Haynes Township, Alcona County, northeastern lower Michigan. Established to ward mariners off a reef that extends lakeward from Sturgeon Point, it is today regarded as a historic example of a Cape Cod style Great Lakes lighthouse. History The light station was built in 1869 by the United States Lighthouse Board. The Board was in the midst of a lighthouse building boom on the Great Lakes due to increased maritime traffic, and in response to a large number of lost ships and men: Congress approved 70 lights on the western Great Lakes in thirty years: 28 in the 1850s, and 21 in each of the following decades. The location is roughly halfway between Alpena's Thunder Bay Island and the northern entry to Saginaw Bay. Haynes Township is a civil township of Alcona County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 722 at the 2010 census. Communities *Alcona is an unincorporated community located along the shores of Lake Huron in the northern portion of the township a . It was first settled around 1858 by Canadian fisherman William Hill, and the community was originally called The Cove. It was renamed Alcona after the name of the county, which was devised by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft as an Indian word that means "beautiful plain." A post office was established on January 9, 1867. Poverty Island Light
The Poverty Island Light is a light house located on Poverty Island in northwestern Lake Michigan, south of Garden Peninsula. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 as the Poverty Island Light Station. History In 1864, the railroad connection between Escanaba and Negaunee was completed, allowing iron ore to be easily transported to the southern shore of the Upper Peninsula. Shipping traffic into Escanaba immediately increased, which also increased the traffic through the relatively narrow Poverty Island Passage near the southern shore of Poverty island. The Poverty Island Passage was hazardous to traverse after dark, so in 1867 the Lighthouse Board requested funds to build a lighthouse on the southern tip of Poverty Island.
