Stuart Sidey
Thomas Kay Stuart Sidey (8 October 1908 – 28 October 2007) was a former New Zealand politician who served as Mayor of Dunedin. Biography Early life and career Born in 1908, he was brought up in Corstorphine House. He was the only child of Sir Thomas Sidey, a Dunedin Member of Parliament, cabinet minister and lawyer. Sidey was a lawyer, educated at Otago Boys' High School and the University of Otago. He was on the Otago University Council for 34 years. In World War II he was a Major in the New Zealand Army in the Pacific. He ran the Wickliffe Press in Dunedin and bred racehorses. He married Beryl Thomas in 1933; they had one son (Dr. Tom Sidey, 1934–2016) and one daughter. Political career Sidey was Mayor of Dunedin from 1959 to 1965 for the Citizens Association, and was a member of the Dunedin City Council from 1947 to 1983. The Mayor of Dunedin is the head of the local government, the city council of Dunedin, New Zealand. The Mayor's role is "to provide leadership to the other elected members of the territorial authority, be a leader in the community and perform civic duties". The Mayor is directly elected, using the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system from 2007. The current mayor is Jules Radich who was elected in 2022. The mayor has always been elected at large, with the inaugural election in 1865. Up until 1915, the term of mayor was for one year only. From 1915 to 1935, the term was two years. Philip Connolly
Philip George Connolly (14 November 1899 – 13 February 1970) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. Early life Connoly was born in Dunedin on 14 November 1899 to Hugh Babbington Connolly and Evelyn Emily Connolly (née Smith). He was educated at McAndrew Road School and Otago Boys' High School until leaving school in 1914 upon the death of his father to work for a living as an apprentice fitter. He also worked for New Zealand Railways Department at the Hillside Workshops. Upon the completion of his apprenticeship he gained employment at the Union Steam Ship Company as a marine engineer. He was later elected a member of the Institute of Marine and Power Engineers union and was chairman of the Hillside branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants and later its secretary. Jack Somerville
John Spenser Somerville (7 July 1910 – 5 October 1999) was a New Zealand Presbyterian leader. Biography Somerville was born in the Dunedin suburb of Andersons Bay in 1910, the son of Grace Isabella (née Isherwood) and James Cleland Hall Somerville. He attended the University of Otago, graduating with a Master of Arts degree with second class honours in 1935. From 1935 to 1937 he trained at the Theological Hall of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand at Knox College, at the end of which time he received his certificate of license. He then travelled to the United Kingdom, where he studied at Westminster College, Cambridge and the University of St Andrews. He returned to New Zealand in 1938 to become the minister at Tapanui. During World War II, Somerville served as a chaplain with the New Zealand forces from 1942 to 1945, first in Egypt and then in Italy. In 1945, he was awarded the Military Cross.
