Struan, Skye
Struan ( gd, An Sruthan) is a small village on the west coast of the island of Skye, on the shores of Loch Beag, itself an inlet of Loch Bracadale. "Struan" is the anglicized form (and approximate pronunciation) of the Scottish Gaelic word ''sruthan'', meaning "small stream", or the flow at the point where a spring appears. It has a population of around 300. While there are four different Protestant denominations represented in the area, church attendance has declined dramatically, and Sabbath keeping is largely forgotten. The local economy, like most of Skye, is heavily supported by tourism. Fishing, crofting and to a lesser extent, large-scale farming also contribute. Struan has a small local grocery shop, four churches, a petrol station, an outdoor shop and a primary school. Buried in the old graveyard are the climber, J. On 4 September 1877 a goods trains from Inverness was travelling between Dalnaspidal and Struan when 17 of the wagons became detached from the train owing to a failure of a coupling. As it was dark, the driver could not see what had happened but brought the front part of the train to a halt at Struan station. Struan Rodger (born 18 September 1946) is a British actor who has appeared widely in a range of supporting roles. He appeared briefly in ''Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?'' in 1978 but his first major film role was as Eric Liddell's friend and running coach Sandy McGrath, in the Oscar-winning 1981 film, ''Chariots of Fire''. Struan Keith Sutherland AO (17 June 193611 January 2002) was an Australian medical researcher who developed effective antivenoms and other treatments for people bitten or stung by venomous Australian wildlife. Early life Sutherland was born in Sydney and grew up in Bendigo, Victoria. He studied medicine at the University of Melbourne, graduating in 1960, and served in the Royal Australian Navy from 1962 to 1965. The CSL years In 1966, Sutherland joined the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories and was soon appointed Head of Immunology Research, a position which he held for 28 years. The death in January 1979 of a young girl, Christine Sturges, from a funnel-web spider bite prompted Sutherland to look for a funnel-web antivenom. Many previous researchers had failed to develop such an antivenom, but Sutherland persevered. In January 1980, a two-year-old boy James Cully was bitten by a funnel-web, and died three days later. Dirk Lochlin Struan (1797–1841) is the fictional main character of James Clavell's 1966 novel ''Tai-Pan''. The title comes from a Cantonese term that Clavell loosely translates as "supreme leader", and Struan is the Tai-pan or head of his own trading company in China, Struan & Company.
