Strike! (musical)
''Strike!'' is a 2005 historical stage musical depicting the Winnipeg General Strike. It has been adapted into a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio production, a 17-minute short film, and the full-length feature film ''Stand!''. Content ''Strike!'' focuses on Mike Sokolowski, a Ukrainian immigrant from Galicia who was killed by Royal North-West Mounted Police on " Bloody Saturday", 21 June 1919. The account of his life is heavily fictionalized, and is character is composited with another Ukrainian-Canadian labourer. Sokolowski begins the play as an anti-Semite who loathes so-called Jewish Bolshevism, but learns better due in part to a romantic sub-plot involving his godson Stefan (originally Myron) and his Jewish neighbour Rebecca. Rainbow Stage
Rainbow Stage is a not-for-profit musical theatre company and outdoor theatre operator, located in Kildonan Park in north Winnipeg, Manitoba. The covered amphitheatre seats up to 2,600 people and operates from May to September. History As urban parks became more popular in the 1910s, various public events began to be held in Winnipeg's Kildonan Park and Assiniboine Parks, leading to the creation of a permanent bandstand in Kildonan Park in 1917. The Kildonan Park Bandstand was for years a popular venue for live music, dance contests, and large-scale community sing-a-longs hosted by ''The'' ''Winnipeg Tribune'' newspaper, called "Nights of Community Song", at the height of the Depression era. Winnipeg () is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba in Canada. James Ashdown
James Henry Ashdown (31 March 1844 – 5 April 1924), the "Merchant Prince of Winnipeg", arrived in Winnipeg in 1868 and began his business as a tinsmith. In 1870, he purchased two lots on the corner of Main Street and Bannatyne Avenue, the location of the Ashdown retail store for over one hundred years. Ashdown's successful real estate speculation, combined with his business acumen, made him a millionaire by 1910. By 1875, his business had expanded into both retail and wholesale operations and by 1881, his worth was over $150,000. He established branch stores in Portage la Prairie and Emerson, employing over seventy-five people. In 1889, he opened a store in Calgary. Gideon Robertson
Gideon Decker Robertson, (August 26, 1874 – August 5, 1933) was a Canadian Senator and Canadian Cabinet minister. Robertson was a telegrapher by profession and had links with conservatives in the labour movement. In January 1917, he was appointed to the Senate as a Conservative as a means of bringing in labour representation during the First World War. When Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden formed a Unionist government in October as a means of creating a national government for the war effort, he included Robertson in the cabinet, making him minister without portfolio despite not having a seat in the House of Commons, to represent organised labour. Catherine Wreford
Catherine Anne Wreford (born June 26, 1980) is a Canadian actress, dancer and singer. Early life Wreford was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in June 1980. She graduated from Kelvin High School and later trained at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Career Wreford starred in the Broadway production '' 42nd Street''.
