Strigoceratidae
The Strigoceratidae is a family in the ammonitid superfamily Haploceratoidea, restricted to the lower Middle Jurassic, Bajocian stage, possibly derived from the Hammitoceratidae. The family was established and named by Buckman in 1924. Description The shells of the Strigoceratidae are compressed to oxyconic, with a narrow or minute umbilicus and simple or irregularly branched ribbing almost confined to the outer (ventral) half of the whorl sides. The sutures are moderately simple to complex, with a long umbilical lobe bearing a graded series of Auxiliaries. Haploceratoidea
Haploceratoidea, formerly Haplocerataceae, is an extinct superfamily of Ammonoidea, ammonoid cephalopods belonging to the Ammonitida that unites three families, Strigoceratidae, Oppeliidae, and Haploceratidae, listed below. Haploceratoidea begins with all three families in the lower Middle Jurassic, Bajocian. Strigoceratidae is limited to the Bajocian but Oppeliidae, and Haploceratidae extend through the remaining Jurassic, well into the Cretaceous; the Oppeliidae into the middle Albian, the Haplocertidae only into the Valanginian. Diagnosis Haploceratoidea are typically compressed, discoidal Ammontida that may be keeled or unkeeled, tending to be oxyconic, with usually falcoid or falcate ribbing. The aptychus, aptychi are paired and differ between families and have been found ''in situ'' in e.g. ''Oppelia, Oppelia subrudiata'' and in ''Pseudolissoceras''. Praestrigites
''Praestrigites'' is a genus from the family Strigoceratidae which is included in the ammonitid superfamily Haploceratoidea. ''Praestrigites'' was named by Buckman in 1924, who also that year named the family Strigoceratidae. The genotype is ''P. praenuntius'' Distribution ''Praestrigites'' comes from the Middle Jurassic (Bajocian) and has been found in Morocco. Sydney Savory Buckman
Sydney Savory Buckman (3 April 1860, in Cirencester – 26 February 1929) was a British palaeontologist and stratigrapher. He is known for his studies of extinct marine invertebrates, especially the Brachiopoda and Ammonoidea of the Jurassic era ( Year#SI prefix multipliers, Ma (million years ago)). Biography Buckman was the eldest son of James Buckman (1814-1884), Professor of Geology, Botany, and Zoology at the Royal Agricultural College 1848-1863, and his wife Julia (1834–1865). His first scientific paper (which related to Brachiopoda) was published in 1883, in the ''Proceedings of the Dorsetshire Natural History Field Club''. He was a prolific author. He showed that ammonites could be used as index fossils to subdivide the Jurassic strata. Ammonitida
Ammonitida is an order of ammonoid cephalopods that lived from the Jurassic through Paleocene time periods, commonly with intricate ammonitic sutures. Ammonitida is divided into four suborders, the Phylloceratina, Lytoceratina, Ancyloceratina, and Ammonitina. The Phylloceratina is the ancestral stock, derived from the Ceratitida near the end of the Triassic. The Phylloceratina gave rise to the Lytoceratina near the beginning of the Jurassic which in turn gave rise to the highly specialized Ancyloceratina near the end of the Jurassic. Both the Phylloceratina and Lytoceratina gave rise to various stocks combined in the Ammonitina. Bajocian First Appearances
In the geologic timescale, the Bajocian is an age and stage in the Middle Jurassic. It lasted from approximately 170.3 Ma to around 168.3 Ma (million years ago). The Bajocian Age succeeds the Aalenian Age and precedes the Bathonian Age. Stratigraphic definitions The Bajocian Stage takes its name from the Latin name (Bajocae) of the town of Bayeux, in the region of Normandy in France. The stage was named and introduced in scientific literature by French palaeontologist Alcide d'Orbigny in 1842. The base of the Bajocian stage is defined as the place in the stratigraphic column where fossils of the ammonite genus ''Hyperlioceras'' first appear.
