''Strictly Elvis'' is an extended play (EP) by American singer and musician Elvis Presley released in December 1959. It peaked at number one in the number-one EPs chart in the United Kingdom and was five weeks in the number-one, until it was superseded by ''Expresso Bongo'', which became number-one on April 23, 1960. An EP, also called "Strictly Elvis", had been issued in the US in January 1957. This contained a completely different set of tracks; it was not issued in the UK until 1964, when it came out under the title "Elvis For You, Volume 2". The UK "Strictly Elvis" EP had no direct US equivalent. Rockabilly is one of the earliest styles of rock and roll music. It dates back to the early 1950s in the United States, especially the Southern United States, South. In the 1950s and 1960s "a third vinyl format" was introduced alongside long-playing (LP) albums, and singles. The extended play (EP) used the same formats as singles but contained more tracks. Singles were the popular record format at the time – predominantly 10-inch 78 rpm and 7-inch 45 rpm formats – and the first singles chart was published by ''New Musical Express'' in 1952 with many other publications also producing singles charts in the 1950s and 1960s. ''Record Mirror'' published the first album chart in 1956 and, when ''Record Retailer'' began compiling an LP chart on 12 March 1960, they also compiled an EP chart. ''Expresso Bongo'' is a 1958 West End musical and a satire of the music industry. It was first produced on the stage at the Saville Theatre, London, on 23 April 1958. Its book was written by Wolf Mankowitz and Julian More, with music by David Heneker and Monty Norman, also the co-lyricist with Julian More. The production starred Paul Scofield with Hy Hazell, Millicent Martin and James Kenney. Musical director was Burt Rhodes and director William Chappell. "Old Shep" is a song composed by Red Foley, with lyrics by Arthur Willis, published in 1935, about a dog Foley owned as a child. In reality, the dog, poisoned by a neighbor, was a German shepherd called "Hoover." Clyde Julian "Red" Foley (June 17, 1910 – September 19, 1968) was an American musician who made a major contribution to the growth of country music after World War II. For more than two decades, Foley was one of the biggest stars of the genre, selling more than 25 million records.
