Streissguth Gardens
The Streissguth Gardens are a family-maintained hillside garden covering approximately one acre on the northwest side of Capitol Hill in Seattle, Washington. Early history The Streissguth Gardens have grown incrementally over the years, beginning with Daniel Streissguth’s purchase of the north lot by the Blaine steps in 1962. In 1965, Ann Roth Pytkowicz moved into the adjacent house at 1806 Broadway East and began cultivating a garden there. The two gardens were joined when Daniel and Ann married in 1968, and the combined gardens form the basis for the larger family garden that exists today. Expansion In 1972, two years after Ben was born, the family purchased the hillside lots south of the Blaine steps. The first path was cleared in order to admire a native trillium discovered blooming among the weeds in the middle of the hillside. Ann Streissguth
Ann Roth Pytkowicz Streissguth (born December 13, 1932) is a scientist known for her groundbreaking research on fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. She is an Endowed Professor Emeritus and Founding Director of the Fetal Alcohol Drug Unit at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She is the author of ''Fetal alcohol syndrome: A guide for families and communities'' and ''The challenge of fetal alcohol syndrome: Overcoming secondary disabilities.'' These books guide families on how to overcome the detrimental effects brought on by fetal alcohol syndrome. Awards Streissguth was awarded the University of Washington Outstanding Public Service Award in 1997, and the Rosett Award in 1998 for her contributions to research on fetal alcohol syndrome. Lake Union
Lake Union is a freshwater lake located entirely within the city limits of Seattle, Washington, United States. It is a major part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, which carries fresh water from the much larger Lake Washington on the east to Puget Sound on the west.
