Street Photography Now
''Street Photography Now'' is a survey book of contemporary street photography, edited by Sophie Howarth and Stephen McLaren and published by Thames & Hudson in 2010. It includes work by 56 photographers. Blake Andrews described the book as "the first broad street photography book to be published since ''Bystander'' in 1994". Between 2010 and 2012, a series of exhibitions were held in Europe with work from the book. Street Photography
Street photography (also sometimes called candid photography) is photography conducted for art or enquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places. Although there is a difference between street and candid photography, it is usually subtle with most street photography being candid in nature and some candid photography being classifiable as street photography. Street photography does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment. Though people usually feature directly, street photography might be absent of people and can be of an object or environment where the image projects a decidedly human character in facsimile or aesthetic.Colin Westerbeck. Jens Olof Lasthein
Jens Olof Lasthein (born 1964) is a Swedish freelance photographer. His widely exhibited work principally covers scenes before and after the war in former Yugoslavia and the areas across Europe bordering the old Iron Curtain. Early life Born in Sweden in 1964, Lasthein grew up in Denmark. After school, he travelled widely in Asia and eastern Europe. He worked in a shipyard and as a bus driver before studying photography at ''Nordens Fotoskola'' (the Nordic Photo School) in Stockholm (1989–1992). Photography Since 1992, Lasthein has lived in Stockholm and worked as a freelance photographer for magazines and newspapers as well as on his own projects. Two of his major projects, which have formed the bases of his exhibitions and have also been published in book form, are described below. Matt Stuart (photographer)
Matt Stuart (1974) is a British street photographer. He was a member of the In-Public street photography collective. Stuart also works as an advertising photographer. His books of street photography include ''All That Life Can Afford'' (2016) and ''Into the Fire'' (2020). His work has also been exhibited in solo exhibitions in Britain and the USA. Of note, his work also appeared in group exhibitions at the Museum of London (which acquired his work for its permanent collection), the Museum of the City of New York, France, Bangkok and Stockholm. Boris Savelev
Boris Savelev (russian: Савельев, Борис Александрович, born 1948) is a Ukrainian-born Russian photographer. Career His original career was as an aerospace engineer, however it is photography that made his name since 1976. His works have been shown in galleries in his home country as well as United States, Germany and the UK. In the 1980s, Savelev experimented on color photographies. His first published work was ''The Secret City'' (1988), color photographs taken using Orwachrome film. The photographs capture Russia during a period of great upheaval, from the Cold War, through the dissolution of the U.S.S.R., to modern-day Russia. His style has been described as observational realism preoccupied with light and form. Savelev himself credits his 'methodical, scientific background' for the constructivist aesthetic in his photos. Paul Russell (photographer)
Paul Russell (born 1966) is a British street photographer, based in Weymouth, Dorset. He was a member of the In-Public international street photography collective. Russell's work has been published in his own publications, the book ''Eastleigh By-election 2013'' and the zines ''On Weymouth Beach'' and ''Country Show'', and in a few survey publications on street photography. His work is held in the collection of the Museum of London and he has had solo exhibitions in venues around the UK, and in group exhibitions in various locations worldwide. Raghu Rai
Raghu Rai (born 1942), is an Indian photographer and photojournalist. He was a protégé of Henri Cartier-Bresson, who appointed Rai, then a young photojournalist, to Magnum Photos in 1977. Rai became a photographer in 1965, and a year later joined the staff of ''The Statesman'', a New Delhi publication. In 1976, he left the paper and became a freelance photographer. From 1982 until 1992, Rai was the director of photography for ''India Today''. He has served on the jury for World Press Photo from 1990 to 1997. He is known for his books, ''Raghu Rai's India: Reflections in Colour'' and ''Reflections in Black and White''. Gus Powell
Gus Powell (1974) is an American street photographer. He was a member of the In-Public street photography collective. Powell has published two of his own photography books: ''The Company of Strangers'' (2003) and ''The Lonely Ones'' (2015), the latter with work spanning a decade. He has had a solo exhibition at Museum of the City of New York and his work is held in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam. Martin Parr
Martin Parr (born 23 May 1952) is a British documentary photographer, photojournalist and photobook collector. He is known for his photographic projects that take an intimate, satirical and anthropological look at aspects of modern life, in particular documenting the social classes of England, and more broadly the wealth of the Western world. Trent Parke
Trent Parke (born 1971) is an Australian photographer. He is the husband of Narelle Autio, with whom he often collaborates. He has created a number of photography books; won numerous national and international awards including four World Press Photo awards; and his photographs are held in numerous public and private collections. He is a member of Magnum Photos. Life and work Parke was born and brought up in Newcastle, New South Wales; he now lives in Adelaide, South Australia. He started photography when he was twelve. Mimi Mollica (born 1975) is an Italian photographer, based in London. His work concerns "social issues and topics related to identity, environment, migration and macroscopic human transitions." Mollica creates self assigned series—his book ''Terra Nostra'' (2017) is about the permanent scars left behind by the Sicilian Mafia—and works on documentary and photojournalism commissions for magazines and NGOs, and mentoring photographers. His work has also been shown in various group exhibitions and been included in survey publications on street photography.
