Strathy Hall
Strathy Hall is an antebellum Plantation house in the Southern United States, plantation house located near Richmond Hill, Georgia, Richmond Hill in Bryan County, Georgia. It was originally constructed in 1756 by James MacKay, a Scottish Captain serving alongside George Washington under general Ogelthorpe defending the southern boarder from the Spanish. In the early 1800s the house was severely damaged in a fire and by circa 1840 by George W. McAllister restored the house on its original foundation, the paternal uncle of Archibald McAllister, who owned Strathy Hall Plantation, a large rice plantation on the Ogeechee River. Based on photographs, the house was much larger in the early 20th century, due to additions and alterations. Henry Ford removed the additions when he bought the property in the 1920s. Bryan County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 30,233. The county seat is Pembroke. Bryan County is part of the Savannah, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Bryan County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. History Bryan County was created on December 19, 1793, named after Jonathan Bryan (1708–1788), an American Revolutionary War partisan. Richmond Hill is a city in Bryan County, Georgia. The population was 16,633 at the 2020 U.S. Census, an increase of almost 80% from the 2010 population of 9,281. Richmond Hill is part of the Savannah Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Richmond Hill has a historical connection to industrialist Henry Ford. Ford used the town, formerly known as Ways Station, as a winter home and philanthropic social experiment, building the complex known as the Ford Farms along the Ogeechee River in the 1930s. After just one visit he chose this area as his winter home. Ford's dwelling was built on the site of Richmond Plantation, which was burned by elements of General William T. Sherman's army at the conclusion of the " March to the Sea". Archibald McAllister
Archibald McAllister (October 12, 1813 – July 18, 1883) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Early life and education Archibald McAllister (grandson of John Andre Hanna, and the paternal nephew of the George Washington McAllister, the owner of Strathy Hall) was born at Fort Hunter, Pennsylvania, near present-day Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He attended the common schools and Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He moved to Blair County, Pennsylvania, in 1842 and engaged in manufacturing charcoal iron at Springfield Furnace, Pennsylvania. Career McAllister was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-eighth Congress. Although he was a Democrat, he supported the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment. Wild Heron
Wild Heron is a historic plantation house approximately fifteen miles south of Savannah, Georgia. It is one of the oldest domestic structures in Georgia and is a relatively intact example of a typical architectural genre which flourished in coastal Georgia and South Carolina in the eighteenth century. Adding to its significance is its association with Francis Henry Harris (1710–1771) and his son, Col. Francis Henry Harris (1740–1782), prominent figures of the Colonial and Revolutionary eras in Georgia, and the operation through two hundred years as a working rice plantation, owned for much of that time by descendants of the same family.
