The Sports
The Sports were an Australian Rock music, rock group which performed and recorded between 1976 and 1981. Mainstay members were Stephen Cummings on lead vocals and Robert Glover on bass guitar, with long-term members such as Paul Hitchins on drums, Andrew Pendlebury on lead guitar and vocals, and Martin Armiger on guitar. Their style was similar to both 1970s British Pub rock (United Kingdom), pub rock bands (such as Brinsley Schwarz) and British New wave music, new wave (such as Elvis Costello). The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music enthusiast David Kent (historian), David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. From June 1988, the Australian Recording Industry Association, which had been using the top 50 portion of the report under licence since mid-1983, chose to produce their own listing as the ARIA Charts. Before the Kent Report, ''Go-Set'' magazine published weekly Top-40 Singles from 1966, and Album charts from 1970 until the magazine's demise in August 1974. David Kent later published Australian charts from 1940 to 1973 in a retrospective fashion, using state by state chart data obtained from various Australian radio stations. Suddenly is the third studio album by Australian rock and pop band The Sports, released in March 1980. The album peaked at number 13 on the Australian Kent Music Report. Reception Steve Schnee from AllMusic said "Although they are fully formed three-minute slices of Aussie pop/rock, the melodies aren't as immediate and engaging as before. There are moments that are equal to the previous album, including "Strangers on a Train," "Never Catch Her," "Oh Mama No," and the title track, but those high points don't occur quite as often, adding "through it all, Stephen Cummings' 'angry young man' vocals are energetic and spirited and the band is tight and inspiring."
