Strandebarm is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county, Norway. The original municipality was large, spanning both sides of the central part of the Hardangerfjorden. It also included the island of Varaldsøy. Over time, the municipality was divided and by the time of its dissolution in 1965, it was . Strandebarm Church
Strandebarm Church ( no, Strandebarm kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Kvam Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Bru. It is the church for the Strandebarm parish which is part of the Hardanger og Voss prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1876 using plans drawn up by the architect Ole Vangberg. The church seats about 550 people. Historically, this was the main church for the old Strandebarm municipality. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1306, but the church was built before that time. The first church at Bru was a wooden stave church that was likely built in the 13th century. The first church was located on the shore of the river, about to the west of the present church site. Kysnesstranda
Kysnesstranda is a village in the Ullensvang municipality, Vestland county, Norway. The village lies along the southern shore of the Hardangerfjorden. The village lies about south of the village of Jondal. History Kysnesstranda was historically part of the old municipality of Strandebarm. Strandebarm included territory on both sides of the Hardangerfjorden. In 1826, the most of Strandebarm located east of the fjord was separated from Strandebarm to create the new municipality Ullensvang; however, the village of Kysnesstranda and the area surrounding it remained a part of Strandebarm despite its location on the east side of the fjord. On 1 January 1964, when Strandebarm municipality was merged into the neighboring municipality of Kvam, the Kysnesstranda area was merged into Jondal. Kysnesstranda had 100 inhabitants at that time. Bru or Ploganes is a village in the municipality of Kvam in Vestland county, Norway. It's located in the Strandebarm area, on the northern shore of the Hardangerfjorden. It is located about north of the village of Omastranda and about northwest (across the fjord) from the village of Kysnesstranda in Jondal Municipality. Varaldsøy (municipality)
Varaldsøy is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1902 until its dissolution in 1965. The municipality encompassed the whole island of Varaldsøy and a wide strip of the mainland west of the island. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village area of Varaldsøy on the southern part of the island, where Varaldsøy Church is located. This system of municipalities was created in a bill approved by the Parliament of Norway and signed into law by King Carl Johan on 14 January 1837. List Of Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so.
