Stoystown Historic District
The Stoystown Historic District is a national historic district that is located in Stoystown in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. History and architectural features This district includes eighty-one contributing buildings, two contributing sites, and one contributing object. It encompasses central business district and surrounding residential areas in Stoystown with structures that date primarily from the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Notable non-residential buildings include the Grace Lutheran Church (1888), St. Paul's United Church of Christ (1897), the John Griffin Building (c. 1880), the Laurel Bank (1922), the former Custer House (c. 1830/1870), the H.J. Specht Hardware building (c. 1920), the former IOOF Hall (c. 1900), and a former public school (1929). Stoystown, Pennsylvania
Stoystown is a borough in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 300 at the 2020 census. Stoystown is located SSE of Johnstown and northeast of Somerset. History The site of the Stony Creek Encampment is near the eastern end of Stoystown, slightly north of U.S. Route 30. This small supply depot was located along Forbes Road during the French & Indian War. Daniel Stoy was one of the first settlers west of the mountains. From the records of Harmon Husband, we find that Stoy lived along the Forbes Road about 1762 near the Casper Stotler place in Shade Township, that he made his living by hunting, and that he was driven from his cabin home several times by the Indians, taking refuge at Fort Bedford. A bungalow is a small house or cottage that is either single-story or has a second story built into a sloping roof (usually with dormer windows), and may be surrounded by wide verandas. American Craftsman
American Craftsman is an American domestic architectural style, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, which included interior design, landscape design, applied arts, and decorative arts, beginning in the last years of the 19th century. Its immediate ancestors in American architecture are the Shingle style architecture, Shingle style, which began the move away from Victorian ornamentation toward simpler forms; and the Prairie style of Frank Lloyd Wright. The name "Craftsman" was appropriated from furniture-maker Gustav Stickley, whose magazine ''The Craftsman'' was first published in 1901.
