R. Stothert’s & Sons Ltd (later Stothert's LTD) was originally a firm of chemists founded by Richard Stothert (1830 –1912) in Atherton, Greater Manchester. They were well-known manufacturing chemists and wholesalers of Medicines and Beverages. History The business was founded in 1852. Prior to this Richard Stothert, who was born in the village of Goosnargh near Preston was an apprentice to a chemist in 1851 and worked and lived in Bolton. Stothert's were well known by their main marketing image of "The bearded man" (founder Richard Stothert) placed on its tins and boxes. Early production included pills, tonics, ointments and powders for common medical complaints. The bearded man also featured on bottles of ginger beer and carbonated drinks that the company started producing in the early 20th century. James Stothert (7 April 1870 – after 1895) was an English footballer who played in The Football League for Blackburn Rovers, Lincoln City and Notts County. Early Career In 1887 aged 16/17 Stothert signed as a youth player for a club called Braeside F.C. There are no records available for this club but Braeside is a district of Blackburn. Jean Louise Stothert (née Wolf; born February 7, 1954) is an American politician and former nurse serving as the 51st mayor of Omaha, Nebraska. She is the first woman to hold the office and was sworn in as Mayor on June 10, 2013. She was re-elected on May 10, 2017, and May 11, 2021. Personal life Jean Stothert was born on February 7, 1954, in Wood River, Illinois. She earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Seattle Pacific University. Stothert married Joe Stothert in 1981. He became a critical care surgery specialist at the Nebraska Medical Center. The couple had two children, and were married until Joe Stothert died at age 72. In May, 2022 she married Dr. J. Stothert & Pitt was a British engineering company founded in 1855 in Bath, England. It was the builder of various engineering products ranging from Dock cranes to construction plant and household cast iron items. It went out of business in 1989. The name and intellectual property became part of Clarke Chapman. History George Stothert (n.b. early on the name is sometimes rendered as Stoddard or Stodhert) moved to Bath in 1785 having taken over Thomas Harris's ironmonger's business. He was an agent for Abraham Darby I's Coalbrookdale Iron Company, selling all types of domestic ironmongery. By 1815 they set up their own foundry as Abraham Darby had opened his own warehouse in Bristol. The company was now managed by his son, also George. In 1851 they exhibited a hand crane at the Great Exhibition. However the business originated with an earlier enterprise Henry Stothert and Company. Origins The firm was originally started by Henry Stothert in 1837 as Henry Stothert and Company. Henry was the son of George Stothert (senior), founder of the nearby Bath engineering firm of Stothert & Pitt. Henry's brother, also named George, was manager of the same firm. The company was given an order for two broad gauge () Firefly class express passenger engines ''Arrow'' and ''Dart'', with driving wheels, delivered for the opening of the Great Western Railway (GWR) from Bristol to Bath on 31 August 1840. This was soon followed by an order for eight smaller Sun class engines with driving wheels.
