Sir John Alexander Macdonald (January 10 or 11, 1815 – June 6, 1891) was the first prime minister of Canada, serving from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891. The dominant figure of Canadian Confederation, he had a political career that spanned almost half a century. Macdonald was born in Scotland; when he was a boy his family immigrated to Kingston in the Province of Upper Canada (today in eastern Ontario). As a lawyer, he was involved in several high-profile cases and quickly became prominent in Kingston, which elected him in 1844 to the legislature of the Province of Canada. By 1857, he had become premier under the colony's unstable political system. Carl Størmer
Fredrik Carl Mülertz Størmer (3 September 1874 – 13 August 1957) was a Norwegian mathematician and astrophysicist. In mathematics, he is known for his work in number theory, including the calculation of and Størmer's theorem on consecutive smooth numbers. In physics, he is known for studying the movement of charged particles in the magnetosphere and the formation of aurorae, and for his book on these subjects, ''From the Depths of Space to the Heart of the Atom''. He worked for many years as a professor of mathematics at the University of Oslo in Norway. A crater on the far side of the moon is named after him. Erling Størmer
Erling Størmer (born 2 November 1937) is a Norwegian mathematician, who has mostly worked with operator algebras. He was born in Oslo as a son of Leif Størmer. He was a grandson of Carl Størmer and nephew of Per Størmer. He took his doctorate at Columbia University in 1963 with thesis advisor Richard Kadison, and was a professor at the University of Oslo from 1974 to his retirement in 2007. Horst Ludwig Störmer
Horst Ludwig Störmer (; born April 6, 1949) is a German physicist, Nobel laureate and emeritus professor at Columbia University. He was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Daniel Tsui and Robert Laughlin "for their discovery of a new form of quantum fluid with fractionally charged excitations" (the fractional quantum Hall effect). He and Tsui were working at Bell Labs at the time of the experiment cited by the Nobel committee. Biography Störmer was born in Frankfurt am Main, and grew up in the nearby town of Sprendlingen. Leif Størmer
Leif Størmer (1 July 1905 – 15 May 1979) was a Norwegian paleontologist and geologist. He was professor of historical geology at the University of Oslo from 1946 to 1975. His father was the mathematician Carl Størmer, and his son the mathematician Erling Størmer. Early life and education Størmer was born in Kristiania (now Oslo) to Fredrik Carl Mülertz Størmer (1874–1957) and Adelaide Clauson (1877–1973). His brother Per Størmer (1907–1991) became a botanist. His sister Henny married landowner Carl Otto Løvenskiold. Leif Størmer attended school in Kristiania, and became interested in paleontology and geology. In 1923, he took his examen artium, and studied thereafter at the University of Oslo. He graduated with the cand.mag. degree in 1928, then the dr.philos. degree in 1931. Mark August Stoermer (born June 28, 1977) is an American musician and songwriter. He is best known as the bassist for the rock band the Killers, with whom he has recorded six studio albums. Stormer was an American Hard Rock band that was popular in the 1970s and 80s whose members were Tim Gaines, Donny Simmons, Tom Hardy, Steve Hall, Stephen Shawn, Jeremy Masana, Jimmy Bates and Randy Jones. Most notably, Stormer had musicians from the San Gabriel Valley who went on to become successful. Stormer's bassist Tim Gaines left to become a member of the popular band Stryper. Donny Simmons, who also played in another popular band, Yankee Rose, was known to be a highly influential guitarist in the San Gabriel Valley, especially to Tracy G, the former guitarist of popular band Dio. Störmer is a lunar impact crater that is located on the far side of the Moon from the Earth, named after Carl Størmer, a Norwegian mathematician and aurora researcher. The Stormers (known for sponsorship reasons as the DHL Stormers) is a South African professional rugby union team based in Cape Town in the Western Cape that competes in the United Rugby Championship, a trans-hemispheric competition that also involves sides from Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. They competed in the Super Rugby competition until 2020. They are centred on the Western Province Currie Cup side, but also draw players from the Boland Cavaliers (covering the Cape Winelands and West Coast districts, with home matches in Wellington).
