Stonyfell is an eastern suburb in the foothills of Adelaide, Australia, within the council area of the City of Burnside. It has parks with walking tracks, and two creeks running through it. Joseph Crompton
Joseph Crompton (17 January 1840 – 27 April 1901) was a vigneron, manufacturer and exporter who founded several companies in the early days of the colony of South Australia. The eastern foothills suburb of Stonyfell was named after the property he bought in 1858, on which vineyards were established. Stonyfell Winery still exists today, although the grapes are sourced from Langhorne Creek. Crompton also established olive groves and set up businesses manufacturing soap, and exporting animal skins and plant resins to Britain. History He was born in Liverpool, England, the youngest of the four sons of Woodhouse Crompton and his wife Lucy ( Fletcher). St Peter's Girls' School (commonly known as Saints Girls) is an independent Anglican early learning, primary and secondary day school for girls located in the Adelaide suburb of Stonyfell, in South Australia, Australia. Founded in 1894 and originally located in Kermode Street, North Adelaide (at the current site of the Women's and Children's Hospital), the School is currently located in Stonyfell, east of the Adelaide central business district. Francis Clark And Sons
Francis Clark and Son was an engineering business in the early days of South Australia, which later became Francis Clark and Sons. Francis Clark (1799–1853), previously a silversmith and magistrate in Birmingham, England, founded Francis Clark and Son, importers, with his son J. Howard Clark as accountant soon after migrating to Adelaide with his family in 1850. He then brought in A. Sidney Clark as manager, becoming Francis Clark and Sons, hardware importers and shipping agents of Blyth Street. With the death of the founder in 1853, A. Sidney Clark became sole owner, shifting the company's focus towards real estate, insurance and finance, and in 1871, with the firm of Clark and Crompton (see Henry Clark below), moved to offices in Grenfell Street close to King William Street. Wattle Park, South Australia
Wattle Park is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia in the City of Burnside. History The suburb may have been named by George Scarfe for the property, sections 288 and 289 totalling around , that he purchased around 1880. His residence, renamed "Scarfe House", became the Wattle Park Teachers College in 1957 until 1972, when its usage and name were changed to the Wattle Park Teachers Centre until sold by the Education Department. In 1991 it became the centrepiece of "Wattle Grove", a retirement village for Southern Cross Homes. Olives The Stonyfell Olive Company was founded by Joseph Crompton with William Mair and Sidney Clark in 1873, with planting continuing until 1882 across Stonyfell and adjoining areas. Bragg is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. The seat is named after the eminent physicists Bragg – William Henry and his son, William Lawrence. City Of Burnside
The City of Burnside is a local government area in the South Australian city of Adelaide stretching from the Adelaide Parklands into the Adelaide foothills with an area of . It was founded in August 1856 as the District Council of Burnside, the name of a property of an early settler, and was classed as a city in 1943. The LGA is bounded by Adelaide, Adelaide Hills Council, Campbelltown, Mitcham, Norwood Payneham and St Peters and Unley. A primarily residential upper middle class area, Burnside has little to no industrial activity and a small commercial sector. Burnside, South Australia
Burnside is suburb in the City of Burnside council area in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide. It is primarily a residential suburb. It was named Burnside, an amalgamation of the Scottish word for creek, "burn" and "side" because of the original property's location on the side of River Torrens#Tributaries, Second Creek. Burnside is east of the Adelaide city centre by road. Description Burnside was established and named by Peter Anderson and his family who emigrated from Scotland in 1839. Anderson started a large farm on leased land near Second Creek. The farm had a large number of animals including pigs, poultry and cattle as well as barley and wheat crops. In 1848, the lease was assigned to William Randall (dairyman), William Randall who arranged for the town to be laid out around Second Creek. By the 1870s the area had developed into a small village.
