Stony Valley Railroad Grade
The Stony Valley Railroad Grade (SVRG) is a rail trail that stretches along 21.5 miles through Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, Dauphin, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, Lebanon, and Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, Schuylkill counties for 21.5 miles, from Ellendale to the Lebanon Reservoir, traveling through 44,342 acres of state game land. The Appalachian Trail crosses through the SVRG at Rausch Creek, Pennsylvania, Rausch Creek, which is located near what used to be the town of Rausch Gap, Pennsylvania, Rausch Gap. Trail visitors can expect to see a plethora of wildlife as they travel through nearly 22 miles of land. Horseback riding, fishing, biking, hunting and hiking are all available to visitors. Also, cross country skiing and snowmobiling is possible during the winter months. Unique to trails in Pennsylvania, the SVRG is available for use by motor vehicles one day out of the year. A rail trail is a shared-use path on railway right of way. Rail trails are typically constructed after a railway has been abandoned and the track has been removed, but may also share the right of way with active railways, light rail, or streetcars (rails with trails), or with disused track. As shared-use paths, rail trails are primarily for non-motorized traffic including pedestrians, bicycles, horseback riders, skaters, and cross-country skiers, although snowmobiles and ATVs may be allowed. The characteristics of abandoned railways—gentle grades, well-engineered rights of way and structures (bridges and tunnels), and passage through historical areas—lend themselves to rail trails and account for their popularity.
