Stone House, Nevada
Stone House is a ghost town in Humboldt County, Nevada, United States. A. Woodward, one of the signers of the 1851 " Washoe Code" that dealt with early land claims, was killed near this location in the autumn of 1851. Woodward had partnered with George Chorpenning on a monthly mail contract. Woodward was killed while fulfilling that contract. A post office was located in Stone House from 26 November 1890 to 24 March 1915, when it was moved to Valmy, Nevada. Note that there are at least two other locations named Stone House in Nevada. One in Nye County and another located in the Osgood Mountains of Humboldt County. In addition, there is Stonehouse located in White Pine County and Stonehouse Canyon, located near Farrell, Nevada in Pershing County Pershing County is a county in the U.S. state of Nevada. Farrell, Nevada
Farrell is a ghost town in Pershing County, Nevada, United States. L. H. Egbert discovered ore near Farrell in 1863. Gold and silver ore was discovered in the area in 1905, 1907 and 1908. Farrell was located in the Stonehouse Canyon at the northern end of the Seven Troughs mining district in the Seven Troughs Range The Seven Troughs Range is a mountain range in western Pershing County, Nevada. On July 12, 1912, a flood devastated the area, killing 8 people in nearby Mazuma. The area never really recovered after the flood. Valmy, Nevada
Valmy is a census-designated place in Humboldt County, Nevada, United States, named after the Battle of Valmy in France. The Lone Tree gold-mining complex is located adjacent to I-80; mining ended there in 2007, though a small gold resource remains in place there. In 2021, Nevada Gold Mines sold the mine to i-80 Gold, who hope to process ore there. The Marigold mine is located further south of I-80 and has been in production since 1989. Valmy is also home to the North Valmy Generating Station, jointly owned by NV Energy and Idaho Power. Valmy has a post office, with the ZIP code 89438. George Chorpenning
George W. Chorpenning Jr. (sometimes spelled 'Chorpening')(1 June 1820 - 3 April 1894) was a pioneer in the transportation of mail, freight, and passengers through the arid and undeveloped western regions of nineteenth-century United States. His efforts in the 1850s were vital to the integration of the then-new state of California with the established government and economy east of the Mississippi River. Chorpenning was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, the son of a county judge. He spent his youth in Somerset, and as a young adult he established a business in nearby Stoystown, Pennsylvania. In 1850 he traveled to California in search of gold. Although he did not become wealthy by mining, he could see the critical need for fast and reliable mail service between California and the eastern states, most of which was then being transported by sea around South America. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.
