Stockport, South Australia
Stockport is a small town north of Adelaide and south of Tarlee in South Australia. It was laid out on section 1283, Hundred of Light in 1845 by Samuel Stocks junior, naming it for his birthplace, Stockport in Cheshire (now Greater Manchester), England. On the southern boundary of the Clare & Gilbert Valleys Council area, it was once the heart of a small farming community. Stockport was a stop on the Peterborough railway line which opened past Stockport in 1869, connecting it to Adelaide. The line closed in the 2000s. Stockport today boasts a number of old stone homes, mixed with a number of new residences. At the , Stockport had a population of 234. The Charles Todd Observatory, topped by a 7.5 metre dome, was built at Stockport . It is operated by the Astronomical Society of South Australia. Electoral District Of Frome
Frome is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. It is named after Edward Charles Frome, the third surveyor-general of South Australia. The electorate stretches north-eastwards from the Gawler River and Gulf St Vincent in the south, and includes many of the agricultural areas of the Clare and Gilbert Valleys. It covers a total of and takes in the towns of Auburn, Clare, Mintaro, Port Broughton, Saddleworth, Snowtown and Riverton. Prior to the 2020 redistribution, its main population centre was Port Pirie, since transferred to the Stuart. Frome has existed in three incarnations throughout the history of the House of Assembly: as a two-seat multi-member marginal electorate from 1884 to 1902, as a single-member electorate from 1938 to 1977, and as a marginal to moderately safe single-member electorate for the Liberal Party since 1993. Samuel Stocks Junior
Samuel Stocks ( – 8 March 1863) and his son Samuel Stocks, jun ( – 3 February 1850) were businessmen in the early days of the Colony of South Australia. Stocks was a citizen of Heaton Mersey, near Manchester, where he was senior partner of the bleaching firm of Stocks and Tait which failed during the Panic of 1847. He contested, unsuccessfully, the Stockport (UK Parliament constituency), parliamentary seat of Stockport before migrating to South Australia. He arrived in Adelaide via Sydney on the ''Dorset'' on 27 August 1843. At some stage he returned to England and arrived back in Adelaide with his wife Barbara on the ''Zealous'' on 26 May 1848. He was a dedicated churchman; secretary of Christchurch Sunday School, and a member of the Diocesan Synod. YMCA
YMCA, sometimes regionally called the Y, is a worldwide youth organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, with more than 64 million beneficiaries in 120 countries. Adventure Park
An adventure park is a place which can contain a wide variety of elements, including but not limited to, rope climbing exercises, obstacle courses, bouldering, rock climbing, target oriented activities, and zip-lines. They are usually intended for recreation and embody the spirit and activities often found at outdoor camps and educational facilities, without the facilitated educational component. "Recreational-oriented" adventure parks are usually designed for a larger volume of visitors. They do not follow a specific educational concept, but see the individual, physical and mental challenge as a predominantly recreational activity. Astronomical Society Of South Australia
The Astronomical Society of South Australia (ASSA) was founded in 1892 and is the oldest society of its kind in Australia. It is the only representative body for amateur astronomy in the state of South Australia. It holds regular general monthly meetings, frequent meetings for members of specialised groups and has available two observatories, one with a 300mm telescope at The Heights School within easy reach of Adelaide and used primarily for public viewing, and a second at Stockport with 500mm and 450mm telescopes presently in service and a larger 36-inch instrument currently being considered.
