Stockholm Housemaid Union
The Stockholm Housemaid Union ( sv, Stockholms hembiträdesförening) was a trade union in Sweden organizing female domestic workers between 1904 and 1970. Its members were generally housemaids, but the union also included other Wage, waged women workers in the domestic sphere, such as nurse maids and nannies. In the year of its foundation, the union had 100 members. Originally founded under the name ''Stockholms tjänarinneförening'' (Stockholm Union of Female Servants), the name was changed in 1917 to reflect a professionalisation of the work; from the old-fashioned ''tjänarinna'' ("female servant") to the more modern appearing ''hembiträde'' ("house maid", literally "home assistant"). Maria Qvist
Maria "Maja" Månsson (née Qvist, 5 September 1879 - 9 October 1958) was a Sweden, Swedish politician and active member of the Swedish Social Democratic Party, Social Democrats and the party's Swedish Social Democratic Youth League, Youth League. Biography Maria Qvist was born as the oldest of 11 siblings; her father was a soldier. Many girls at that time and with similar family backgrounds did not receive a formal education after elementary school. But after school, she visited an introductory course in Malmö for teachers in small, rural schools. Afterwards, she also attended the folk high school Hvilan, the oldest one of these institutions in Sweden. She had to work from the age of 15, mostly as maid or servant in Scania and became a full-time activist at 25.
