Stockfisch
Stockfisch Records is a German independent record label, aimed at audiophile fans of guitar-oriented singer-songwriter music and was formed in 1974 by Günter Pauler. Based in Germany, the main focus is European artists, but there are also American musicians working with Stockfisch, some of them expatriates living in Germany. Stockfisch releases vinyl editions of albums and Direct Stream Digital-recordings released as hybrid Super Audio CDs. History The two artists with which Stockfisch Records started out in 1974 were Werner Lämmerhirt and David Qualey. They as guitar-playing singer-songwriters set the tone for many of their kind to come. Over the years, however, other instrumentalists apart from guitarists signed to Stockfisch. Sara K
Sara Katherine Wooldridge, known professionally as Sara K., is an American singer-songwriter and acoustic guitarist. She withdrew from the music business in 2009. Early life Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, she grew up in a family surrounded by music: her mother sang in a church choir, her father in a barbershop quartet, her brother played in a band, and her sister played guitar. However, her family considered music a hobby, not a job. In 1965, at the age of 9, she started playing the guitar, using a flamenco guitar that her sister had left behind. She removed the remaining strings and added four bass strings, ( tuned to an open A). This gave it a fuller tone than a conventional acoustic guitar while not sounding as deep as a bass. Werner Lämmerhirt
Werner Lämmerhirt (17 March 1949 – 14 October 2016) was one of the most important German singer-songwriters and guitarists in the contemporary folk music style. He sang and wrote in both German and English, in a recording career that spanned more than three decades. Early life Lämmerhirt was born in Adlershof, East Berlin. Following the arrest of his father for alleged spying in 1957, his mother fled to West Berlin with Werner and his two sisters. They eventually settled in Schlachtensee, Berlin. His father joined the family in West Berlin when Werner was 12 years old, but became violent and drunken; Lämmerhirt believed that experience gave him, in adult life, a strong aversion to violence and injustice which influenced his songwriting. Chris Jones (November 11, 1958 – September 13, 2005) was an American singer and guitarist who worked mainly in Europe, having moved to Germany after he joined the United States Army. He often recorded with the German audiophile label Stockfisch Records. Biography Christopher Paul Jones was born in Reno, Nevada. At the age of five, he began playing the guitar. A few years later, he decided to become a professional musician, and when he was 11 years old, he was admitted to a program at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland. There he discovered Johann Sebastian Bach, to whom he dedicated his student composition "Sonata in D", and for which Jones was awarded the conservatory's "Young Composer of the Year" award. Brooke Miller (musician)
Brooke Miller is a Canadian singer-songwriter and musician. Early life Miller was born in Montague, Prince Edward Island, Canada on January 14, 1982. She played saxophone as a child and took up the guitar when she was ten years old. Around age 11 she began writing her own songs and at age 12 formed a trio that eventually toured the Maritimes as an opening act for other bands. Mike Silver (musician)
Mike Silver (born 12 September 1945) is a British singer-songwriter, who has been active in the UK contemporary and folk music circuits since the late 1960s. Biography Silver was born in Uffington, Oxfordshire (then Berkshire) in 1945 and started playing guitar at the age of 15, joining a number of locally-known "beat" groups in the Croydon area from around 1964 onwards. He was inspired to move to a more fingerstyle folk/blues approach after witnessing Gerry Lockran at a Canterbury folk club, and began performing himself in the folk clubs of London and Cornwall from the late 1960s onwards. In 1971, he formed the trio, Daylight, together with Chrissie Quayle and Steve Hayton, an American then resident in the UK, which produced one album for RCA in 1971, but fell somewhat between the folk and rock camps and eventually foundered. Direct Stream Digital (DSD) is a trademark used by Sony and Philips for their system for digitally encoding audio signals for the Super Audio CD (SACD). DSD uses pulse-density modulation encoding - a technology to store audio signals on digital storage media which are used for the SACD. The signal is stored as delta-sigma modulated digital audio, which is a sequence of single-bit values at a sampling rate of 2.8224 MHz (64 times the CD audio sampling rate of 44.1 kHz, but only at \tfrac of its 16-bit resolution). Noise shaping occurs by use of the 64-times oversampled signal to reduce noise and distortion caused by the inaccuracy of quantization of the audio signal to a single bit. Allan Taylor (musician)
Allan Taylor (born 30 September 1945 in Brighton, England) is an English singer-songwriter who has written and performed music around the world for over 50 years. Career Taylor left school in 1961. He was an apprentice in telecommunications until 1965. Inspired by skiffle and the beat generation, he started singing and playing guitar in the folk clubs of Brighton through his teenage years. He became a full-time musician in 1966, and left Brighton to become part of the music scene in London. He toured Great Britain, playing various folk clubs, including the Troubadour Club in London, sometimes supporting Fairport Convention. In 1970 he signed a recording contract with United Artists, recording the albums ''Sometimes'' (1971) and ''The Lady'' (1972). The Tiptons Sax Quartet, previously known as The Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet, is a jazz saxophone quartet from Seattle, Washington. The ensemble consists of five members (the fifth member being the quartet's drummer and percussionist). The name of the quartet was inspired by Billy Tipton, a jazz pianist and saxophonist, who upon his death was revealed to be anatomically female. Peter Finger
Peter Finger (born 11 October 1954) is a German acoustic fingerstyle guitarist, songwriter, composer and record producer. His most notable recordings include "Just Another Day in May", "Vielleicht Im Nächsten Leben", "Fanesca", "For You", "101 South", "Blue Horizon", and "No Man's Land". Allmusic journalist, Tim Sheridan, noted when relating to Finger's 1999 album, ''Open Strings'', that "Finger displays remarkable skill and sensitivity as a musician. Hein & Oss was a German duo consisting of twins Heinrich "Hein" Kröher (September 17, 1927 – February 14, 2016) and Oskar "Oss" Kröher (September 17, 1927 – July 1, 2019) were folk singer-songwriters.
