Stirling Station (NJ Transit)
Stirling is a NJ Transit station in the Stirling neighborhood of Long Hill Township, New Jersey along the Gladstone Branch of the Morris and Essex line. The station consists of one side platform, as well as a concrete block shelter constructed in August 1974 after the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad depot was demolished. The Erie Lackawanna Railroad demolished the old depot on August 14, 1972 without notifying then-Passaic Township. Station layout The only physical facility at this station is a cinder-block-walled, shingle-roofed bench shelter facing the track. A pay telephone and a newsstand stand nearby. Long Hill Township is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 8,702, reflecting a decline of 75 (−0.9%) from the 8,777 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 951 (+12.2%) from the 7,826 counted in the 1990 Census. The township is situated in the southernmost part of Morris County bordering both Somerset and Union counties. A side platform (also known as a marginal platform or a single-face platform) is a platform positioned to the side of one or more railway tracks or guideways at a railway station, tram stop, or transitway. Gillette is the first of three station stops on the Gladstone Branch of the Morris & Essex Lines of NJ Transit in Long Hill Township, New Jersey. The station consists of a small low-level side platform with a covered bench shelter on the inbound side of the single track. The station is located at the intersection of Mountain Avenue and Jersey Avenue in the Gillette portion of Long Hill Township. The station has 82 parking spaces and bike lockers. History George Howell was an engineer who surveyed the area for the New Jersey West Line Railroad. The station is named after the local unincorporated area. According to local story, the area of Gillette was named after Rachel Gillette Cornish. Mr. Howell was married to Rachel Melissa Cornish, the daughter of Rachel Gillette. Erie Lackawanna Railroad
The Erie Lackawanna Railway , known as the Erie Lackawanna Railroad until 1968, was formed from the 1960 merger of the Erie Railroad and the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad. The official motto of the line was "The Friendly Service Route". Like many railroads in the northeast already financially vulnerable from the expanding U.S. Interstate Highway System, the line was severely weakened fiscally by the extent, duration and record flood levels due to Hurricane Agnes in 1972. Gladstone Branch
The Gladstone Branch (also known as the Gladstone Line) is a commuter rail line operated by NJ Transit from Gladstone station, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, to either Hoboken Terminal or New York Penn Station. It is one of two branches of the Morris & Essex Lines. The Gladstone Branch junctions with the Morristown Line at Summit. East of Newark Broad Street station, trains may either continue to Hoboken Terminal, where PATH trains or NY Waterway ferries allow connection to New York, or use the Kearny Connection to diverge to New York Penn Station; two peak-hour trains from Gladstone offer direct trips to/from New York Penn Station.
