Stirling Square is a public park in Guildford, Western Australia. Guildford, Western Australia
Guildford is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, 12 km northeast of the city centre within the City of Swan. Guildford was founded in 1829 as one of the earliest settlements of the Swan River Colony. It is one of only three towns in the metropolitan area listed on the Register of the National Trust. History Guildford was established in 1829 at the confluence of the Helena River and Swan River, being sited near a permanent fresh water supply. During Captain Stirling's exploration for a suitable site to establish a colony on the western side of the Australian continent in the late 1820s, the exploration party of boats found a fresh water stream across the river from the site of Guildford which they called Success Hill. Guildford was originally the centre of the Swan River Colony before Perth succeeded in being the dominant location on the Swan Coastal Plain. St Matthew's Church, Guildford
St Matthew's Church is a heritage-listed Anglican Church in Australia, Anglican Church (building), church in Stirling Square (Guildford), Stirling Square, , Western Australia. The church is part of the Anglican Diocese of Perth. Saint Matthew's was the first church to be built in the Swan parish. It was a small octagonal mud-brick church, hastily built on land donated by Governor James Stirling (Royal Navy officer), James Stirling on his Woodbridge estate, next to where Guildford Grammar School now stands. First structure Governor Stirling laid the foundation stone on 6 September 1836, and it was opened a few months later before it was finished. It was not completed until 1839 and was consecrated on 23 November 1848. It was later demolished but the graveyard still remains. St Matthew's became the separate parish of Guildford in 1854. Talbot Hobbs
Lieutenant General Sir Joseph John Talbot Hobbs, (24 August 1864 – 21 April 1938) was an Australian architect and First World War general. Early life Hobbs was born in London, the son of Joseph and his wife Frances Ann Hobbs (née Wilson). Educated at St Mary's church school, Merton, Surrey, Hobbs joined the volunteer artillery in 1883. He also worked as draughtsman for a builder, John Hurst. In 1886, he emigrated with Hurst to Western Australia and established an architectural practice in Perth in 1887. Hobbs designed many of the well known public buildings in Perth and Fremantle, including the Weld Club, the Savoy Hotel and the Perth Masonic Lodge. Hobbs was treasurer of the Western Australian Institute of Architects in 1896, and later became the institute's president from 1909 to 1911.
