Benedict Stilling
Benedikt Stilling (11 February 1810 – 28 January 1879) was a German anatomist and surgeon who was a native of Kirchhain. He was the father of German ophthalmologist Jakob Stilling (1842–1915). In 1832 he received his doctorate from the University of Marburg. Later he had a private practice in Kassel, and travelled extensively throughout Europe, particularly Paris, where he collaborated with physicians that included Claude Bernard (1813–1873), Jean-Martin Charcot (1825–1893) and Jean Zuléma Amussat (1796–1856). Stilling made important contributions in the field of neurology. He performed research involving the structure of the cerebellum, as well as histological studies of the pons. In 1840 he made first mention of vasomotor nerves in a treatise titled ''Physiologisch-pathologische und medicinisch-praktische Untersuchungen über die Spinal-Irritation''. Harald Conrad Stilling
Harald Conrad Stilling (9 February 1815 – 29 November 1891) was a Danish architect who was active in Copenhagen during the Late Classical period of the mid-18th century. He received the C. F. Hansen Medal in 1841. Early life and education Stilling was born in Hørsholm. His father Conrad Frederik Stilling (1766 – 1821) was cup-bearer for Prince Christian Frederik and his mother Juliane Sofie née Hinzpeter (1777 – 1849) was the daughter of the steward at Hirschholm Palace. He spent his first childhood years in his maternal grandfather's home and was then sent to school in Copenhagen before completing a mason's apprenticeship in 1933. He spent the next few years working as a mason in the summer time and studying under Gustav Friedrich Hetsch both privately and at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art. Jakob Stilling
Jakob Stilling (22 September 1842 – 30 April 1915) was a German ophthalmologist from Kassel. He studied medicine at several locations including Paris and Würzburg, and obtained his doctorate in 1865. In 1867 he became an eye doctor in Kassel, later furthering his education in ophthalmic medicine at Paris, Berlin, Vienna and Turin. In 1884 he became a titular professor at the University of Strassburg, where he worked for the remainder of his career. He was the son of surgeon Benedikt Stilling (1810-1879). In 1887 Stilling described an eye movement disorder that was to become known as "Stilling's syndrome". This disorder goes by several other names, including "Duane syndrome", being named after American ophthalmologist Alexander Duane (1858-1926), who studied several clinical cases of the disorder, and in 1905 provided a more comprehensive description of its symptoms.
