Course and watershed The Still River headwaters emanate from Farrington's Pond () at the New York border with Danbury, Connecticut. It meanders through Sanfords Pond () and Lake Kenosia () before entering a concrete aqueduct near downtown Danbury. It then turns north, becoming a more conventional river as it cuts through Brookfield and southern New Milford before joining with the Housatonic (). The river has a drainage area of 85 square miles, and a mean flow of 377 cubic feet per second. The Still River has a brief but impactful history that has influenced its condition today. A still is an apparatus used to distill liquid mixtures by heating to selectively boil and then cooling to condense the vapor. A still uses the same concepts as a basic distillation apparatus, but on a much larger scale. Stills have been used to produce perfume and medicine, water for injection (WFI) for pharmaceutical use, generally to separate and purify different chemicals, and to produce distilled beverages containing ethanol. Application Since ethanol boils at a much lower temperature than water, simple distillation can separate ethanol from water by applying heat to the mixture. Historically, a copper vessel was used for this purpose, since copper removes undesirable sulfur-based compounds from the alcohol. Still River Greenway
The Still River Greenway is a multi-use trail and greenway along the Still River in Brookfield, Connecticut. With both phases complete, the trail runs from the Brookfield Municipal Center to the Brookfield Town Center (also known as the "Four Corners" district) and is completely paved. The other section of the trail runs from the Municipal Center, and loops around in the woods. History The concept of a greenway in Brookfield was first proposed in 2000, when the Town of Brookfield conducted a Residents Needs Assessments study. Construction began in 2011, with Phase One (the Silvermine Road entrance) being completed in 2012 and Phase Two (the remainder of the trail) being completed in 2016. A total of 20,000 to 30,000 people are expected to use the greenway in its first year. There are plans to connect the greenway to points north in New Milford, and to the south in Danbury. Lake Zoar
Lake Zoar is a reservoir on the Housatonic River in the U.S. state of Connecticut. It was formed by the completion of the Stevenson Dam, which flooded an area of Oxford and Stevenson named "Pleasantvale" or "Pleasant Vale". The towns of Monroe, Newtown, Oxford, and Southbury border Lake Zoar. The name Zoar originates from corner of Newtown and Monroe that once called itself Zoar after the Biblical city Zoara near the Dead Sea. The Stevenson Dam Hydroelectric Plant is a hydroelectric power plant located on the Housatonic River at the boundary between the towns of Monroe and Oxford, Connecticut.
