Stielers Handatlas
''Stielers Handatlas'' (after Adolf Stieler, 1775–1836), formally titled ''Hand-Atlas über alle Theile der Erde und über das Weltgebäude'' (''Handy atlas of all parts of the world and of the universe''), was the leading German world atlas of the last three decades of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Published by Justus Perthes of Gotha (established 1785 and still existing there) it went through ten editions from 1816 to 1945. As with many 19th century publications, an edition was issued in parts; for example, the eighth edition was issued in 32 monthly parts. Editions The earliest edition, by Stieler and Christian Gottlieb Reichard, was published as separate plates from 1817 to 1823. There were 47 maps, though the intention had been to publish 50. After Stieler's death Friedrich von Stülpnagel (1786–1865) edited the first (1834-1845) edition, and the second (1845–47) with 107 maps. Hermann Berghaus
Hermann Berghaus ( 16 November 1828 Herford, Westphalia – 3 December 1890, Gotha) was a German cartographer. Biography He was a nephew of Heinrich Berghaus, with whom he had received in 1845-1850 his education at the ''Geographische Kunstschule'' (Geographical School of Art) . During most of his life, he was cartographer in the Geographical Institute of Justus Perthes at Gotha. His best known work is the ''Chart of the world'' which went through at least 12 editions between 1863 and 1924. He also prepared a ''Physikalische Wandkarte von Afrika'' (''Physical wall map of Africa'', 1881). He supervised the revision of his famous uncle's ''Physikalischer Atlas'' (1886), a project of many noted specialists. In recognition of his services to cartography, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Königsberg as early as 1868. The (Latin for "British Encyclopædia") is a general knowledge English-language encyclopaedia. Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition
The ''Encyclopædia Britannica'' Eleventh Edition (1910–1911) is a 29-volume reference work, an edition of the ''Encyclopædia Britannica''. It was developed during the encyclopaedia's transition from a British to an American publication. Some of its articles were written by the best-known scholars of the time. This edition of the encyclopaedia, containing 40,000 entries, has entered the public domain and is easily available on the Internet. The imperial system of units, imperial system or imperial units (also known as British Imperial or Exchequer Standards of 1826) is the system of units first defined in the British Weights and Measures Act 1824 and continued to be developed through a series of Weights and Measures Acts and amendments. Etching is traditionally the process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio (incised) in the metal. In modern manufacturing, other chemicals may be used on other types of material. As a method of printmaking, it is, along with engraving, the most important technique for old master prints, and remains in wide use today. In a number of modern variants such as microfabrication etching and photochemical milling it is a crucial technique in much modern technology, including circuit boards. Augustus Heinrich Petermann (18 April 182225 September 1878) was a German cartographer. Early years Petermann was born in Bleicherode, Germany. When he was 14 years old he started grammar school in the nearby town of Nordhausen. His mother wanted him to become a clergyman, but his excellence in the drawing of maps and his love for geographic readings made his choice of another career inevitable. Christian Gottlieb Reichard
Christian Gottlieb Reichard (26 June 1758 – 11 September 1837) was a German cartographer born in Schleiz, Thuringia. He studied law in Leipzig and subsequently became a city official in Bad Lobenstein. With Adolf Stieler (1775-1836), he collaborated on the first edition of " Stieler's Handatlas", which was a 50-map project that was published between 1817 and 1823.
