Stewart Gull (footballer)
Stewart Gull (born 24 June 1951) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for South Melbourne and Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1970s. The son of former South Melbourne centre half forward Jim Gull, Stewart played in the same position as his father. His sister Robyn Maher is an Olympic bronze medal-winning basketballer. Gull, after being recruited from North Ballarat, kicked three goals on his league debut, against Hawthorn at Lake Oval. He had his most prolific season in 1976 when he booted 36 goals, which was bettered only by Robert Dean from his club, with 37. North Ballarat Football & Netball Club, nicknamed ''The Roosters'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based at Mars Stadium in Ballarat. The club currently fields senior, reserve and Under 19 sides in the Ballarat Football League. Between 1996 and 2017, North Ballarat competed in the Victorian Football League (VFL). 1976 VFL Season
The 1976 VFL season was the 80th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 3 April until 25 September, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top five clubs. The premiership was won by the Hawthorn Football Club for the third time, after it defeated by 30 points in the 1976 VFL Grand Final. Premiership season In 1976, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, plus two substitute players, known as the 19th man and the 20th man. A player could be substituted for any reason; however, once substituted, a player could not return to the field of play under any circumstances. Robert Dean (footballer)
Robert Dean (born 20 October 1950) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood and South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1970s. While at Collingwood, Dean was used as a wingman and it was in that position that he appeared in the famous 1970 VFL Grand Final loss to Carlton. Dean was particularly strong in the air and a good mark so when he crossed to South Melbourne in 1976 he played at centre half forward. On his debut for South Melbourne, in the opening round of the 1976 season, against Geelong at Lake Oval, Dean kicked eight goals. The following round he kicked another six goals and finished the year as South Melbourne's leading goal-kicker with 37. Lakeside Stadium is an Australian sports arena in the South Melbourne suburb of Albert Park. Comprising an athletics track and soccer stadium, it currently serves as the home ground and administrative base for association football club South Melbourne FC, Athletics Victoria, Athletics Australia, Victorian Institute of Sport and Australian Little Athletics. The Hawthorn Football Club, nicknamed the Hawks, is a professional Australian rules football club based in Mulgrave, Victoria, that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL). Robyn Maher
Robyn Maher (born 6 October 1959) is a retired female basketball player from Australia, who played for the Sydney Uni Flames. A three-time Olympian she was a member of the national women's team that won the bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Maher was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2002 Australia Day Honours in recognition of her "service to basketball as a player and administrator, and for the promotion of the sport among young people". In 2006, Maher was inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame. In October 2018, she was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
