Steve P. Zarusky (born June 20, 1943) is a former provincial level politician from Alberta Alberta ( ) is one of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada. It is part of Western Canada and is one of the three prairie provinces. Alberta is bordered by British Columbia to the west, Saskatchewan to the east, the Northwest Ter ..., Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1986 to 1993. He is of Ukrainian descent. Political career Zarusky ran as a candidate for the Progressive Conservatives in the 1986 Alberta general election. He won the Redwater-Andrew electoral district defeating three other candidates including former Social Credit MLA Michael Senych. He ran for a second term in office in the 1989 Alberta general election. In that race he increased his plurality and won the district comfortably. Smoky Lake, Alberta
Smoky Lake is a town in central Alberta, Canada. It is located northeast of Edmonton at the junction of Highway 28 and Highway 855. It lies between the North Saskatchewan River, Smoky Creek and White Earth Creek, in a mainly agricultural area. The provincial historic site of Victoria Settlement is nearby. Long Lake Provincial Park is located north of the town. The Legislative Assembly of Alberta is the deliberative assembly of the province of Alberta, Canada. It sits in the Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton. The Legislative Assembly currently has 87 members, elected first past the post from single-member electoral districts. George Topolnisky
George Topolnisky (August 13, 1916 – March 19, 2012) was a provincial level politician and teacher from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1971 to 1986 sitting with the governing Progressive Conservative caucus. During his time in office he served as a member of the Executive Council of Alberta from 1971 to 1975 as a Minister without portfolio Responsible for rural development. Political career Topolnisky joined the Progressive Conservatives in 1956 and became politically active in 1959 as a party organizer. Topolnisky ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature for the first time in the 1971 Alberta general election. He defeated incumbent Social Credit MLA Michael Senych to pick up the new electoral district of Redwater-Andrew for the Progressive Conservatives. The Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta (often referred to colloquially as Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta) was a provincial centre-right party in the Canadian province of Alberta that existed from 1905 to 2020. Redwater-Andrew was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first-past-the-post method of voting from 1971 to 1993. History Boundary history Redwater-Andrew was created in 1971 from most of the Redwater district, including the communities of Redwater and Smoky Lake, and a part of Willingdon-Two Hills south of the North Saskatchewan River. In 1986 it gained a portion of Clover Bar, including Lamont, and lost some territory to Westlock-Sturgeon. Michael Senych
Michael Senych (September 24, 1926 - March 27, 2002) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1963 to 1971 as a member of the Social Credit Party. Early life Michael Senych was born in Corbin, British Columbia. He attended the University of Alberta and worked twenty-six years as a teacher before entering provincial politics. Political career Senych was elected to the Alberta legislature in the district of Redwater in the 1963 general election. He ran for and won a second term in 1967 He ran for a third term in office in the new electoral district of Redwater-Andrew in the 1971 general election; he was defeated by George Topolnisky of the Progressive Conservative Party. 1989 Alberta General Election
The 1989 Alberta general election was held on March 20, 1989, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Many political observers were surprised by the early election call as less than three years had passed since the previous election. Premier Don Getty, in his second election as Progressive Conservative Party leader, led it to its sixth consecutive term in government, although supported by less than half the votes cast in the election. Despite losing a significant share of the popular vote, the PC's benefited from a split vote between the two main opponents Liberals and NDP. Together those two parties received 55 percent of the vote to the Conservative's 44 percent. The Conservatives sustained a net loss of only two seats in the legislature. Redwater (provincial Electoral District)
Redwater was a provincial electoral district in Alberta mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1940 to 1971 and again from 1993 to 2004. History Boundary history Redwater was created in 1940 from most of the Sturgeon district and a part of Whitford, consisting of the area around Smoky Lake, with the North Saskatchewan River forming its southern boundary. When neighbouring Beaver River was abolished in 1952 a small portion was transferred to Redwater, but otherwise no boundary changes were made until the riding was abolished in 1971. It was replaced by the larger Redwater-Andrew. In 1993, Redwater was created again out of most of Redwater-Andrew and the part of Westlock-Sturgeon containing Morinville. The new riding extended much further southwest than the original Redwater, touching the northern boundary of Edmonton. Nicholas William "Nick" Taylor (November 17, 1927 – October 3, 2020) was a geologist, businessman and politician from Alberta, Canada. Early life Nicholas William Taylor was born November 17, 1927, in Bow Island, Alberta to Marie Louise Ancion and Frederick David Taylor, and was the eldest of five children. Taylor traveled to Medicine Hat for High School, and attended the University of Alberta completing his studies in geology and mining engineering in 1949. Later that year Taylor married Margaret Davies on October 1 and together had nine children. Taylor worked as a geologist in the petroleum industry in Alberta during the 1950s and later started his own company Lochiel Exploration Ltd. in 1960.
