Steve Thomas (sailor)
Stephen Thomas (born 5 January 1977) is a British Paralympic sailor. Thomas has represented Great Britain at three Summer Paralympics and with his colleagues John Robertson and Hannah Stodel has won multiple medals in the Mixed Sonar class at the Disabled Sailing World Championships, including gold in 2005 and 2006. Personal life Thomas was born in 1977, growing up in the Ogmore Valley in south Wales, but moved to Bridgend when he was ten. Thomas was a keen athlete as a youth and represented the Under 18 Wales rugby union team. At the age of 18 Thomas contracted meningococcal septicaemia. He was rushed to hospital and he entered a six-week coma. Complications resulting from his illness resulted in him having both his legs amputated below the knees to save his life. Ogmore Valley
Ogmore Valley ( cy, Cwm Ogwr) is a community in the Bridgend County Borough, Mid Glamorgan, Wales. Made up of the villages of Nantymoel, Ogmore Vale, Price Town and Wyndham, its population at the time of the 2001 census was 7,800, increasing to 7,954 at the 2011 Census. The ribbon housing of the valley follows the Ogwr Fawr tributary which rises at Craig Ogwr and joins the Ogwr Fach at Blackmill. Sailing At The 2008 Summer Paralympics
Eighty athletes representing 25 countries in three keelboat classes - the 2.4mR, the SKUD 18, and the Sonar, took part in sailing in the 2008 Summer Paralympics. Sailing was held in two designated areas on the Yellow Sea, Qingdao, Shandong province, from September 8 to September 13. Competitors had a wide range of physical disabilities including degenerative nerve disease, blindness, missing limbs, and polio. Boats were prepared and launched from the docks of the Qingdao International Sailing Centre, which also included the accessible Qingdao Paralympic Village, a 5-star hotel which previously housed the Olympic Sailing athletes. Scott Meenagh
Scott Meenagh (born 16 September 1989) is a British Paralympic Nordic skiing, para Nordic skier and former British Army soldier. Meenagh came second the 12.5km individual biathlon event at the 2023 World Para Nordic Skiing Championships, and competed at the 2018 Winter Paralympics, 2018 and 2022 Winter Paralympics. Early life and Army career Meenagh is from Cumbernauld, Scotland. He played rugby union for Scotland under-18s. Meeangh served in the British Army Parachute Regiment (United Kingdom), Parachute Regiment, and was deployed to Afghanistan. In 2011, he lost both of his legs after stepping on an improvised explosive device in Helmand Province. He was rehabilitated at Headley Court, and now uses prosthetic limbs. Cross-country skiing is a form of skiing where skiers rely on their own locomotion to move across snow-covered terrain, rather than using ski lifts or other forms of assistance. Cross-country skiing is widely practiced as a sport and recreational activity; however, some still use it as a means of transportation. Variants of cross-country skiing are adapted to a range of terrain which spans unimproved, sometimes mountainous terrain to groomed courses that are specifically designed for the sport.
