Steve Rodgers (playwright)
Steven Gordon Rodgers (born 23 June 1951) is a former Australian politician. He was a Labor member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 2001 to 2004, representing the seat of Burdekin. Biography Rodgers was born in Lismore, New South Wales, and qualified as a boilermaker. He underwent national service from April 1972 to January 1973. In 1997 he was certified as a carpet cleaning technician by the Australian Carpet Cleaning Institute. Rodgers held the posts of President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Burdekin ALP branch before his election to the seat in a surprise win in 2001, pushing incumbent City Country Alliance member Jeff Knuth into third place. Electoral District Of Burdekin
Burdekin is an electoral district in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in the state of Queensland, Australia. Centred on the Ayr–Home Hill region, the electorate also includes some of Townsville's southern semi-rural localities as well as the coal-mining towns of Collinsville, Moranbah and Clermont. The Burdekin River flows through part of the electorate. History The 1949 redistribution abolished the electoral district of Bowen. Part of Bowen was combined with part of Mundingburra (which continued as an electorate, but more centred on Townsville) to create the new electoral district of Burdekin, centred on Ayr and Home Hill. National service is the system of voluntary government service, usually military service. Conscription is mandatory national service. The term ''national service'' comes from the United Kingdom's National Service (Armed Forces) Act 1939. The length and nature of national service depends on the country in question. In some instances, national service is compulsory, and citizens living abroad can be called back to their country of origin to complete it. In other cases, national service is voluntary. The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of Queensland, Australia. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the Monarch of Australia and the Legislative Assembly. The National Party of Australia – Queensland (NPA-Q), commonly known as Queensland Nationals, or the National Party of Queensland, was the Queensland-state branch of the National Party of Australia (NPA) until 2008. Prior to 1974, it was known as the Country Party. Formed in 1915 by the Queensland Farmers' Union (QFU) and serving as the state branch of the National Party of Australia, it initially sought to represent the interests of the farmers but over time became a more general conservative political party in the state, leading to much debate about relations with other conservative parties and a string of mergers that were soon undone. The City Country Alliance (CCA, initially One Nation Queensland) was a short-lived Australian political party, operating exclusively in Queensland, that briefly held six Queensland state parliamentary seats. It was founded in the wake of Pauline Hanson's One Nation experiencing severe ructions in Queensland, the home state of founder Pauline Hanson. One Nation had made a surprisingly good showing at the 1998 state election, winning 11 seats in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. However, in 1999, five MLAs seceded to sit as independents, in protest at the centralisation of party affairs in Sydney, costing One Nation official status in the legislature. Amid delays in the Supreme Court of Queensland acting on an appeal of One Nation's deregistration in Queensland, the five remaining One Nation MLAs tried to register a separate Queensland party. Jeff Knuth
Jeffrey Alan Knuth (born 9 March 1962) is an Australian politician. Biography Born in Ayr, Queensland, he was a painter and decorator before entering politics. In 1998, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland as a member of Pauline Hanson's One Nation, representing the seat of Burdekin. He was party whip and spokesperson for Public Works and Housing until 23 February 1999, when he resigned from the party to sit as an independent. On 5 August, he formed the Country Party Queensland (initially known as New Country Party QLD) as a splinter group from One Nation, but on 18 February 2000 joined the larger City Country Alliance, led by Bill Feldman. He was defeated by Labor's Steve Rodgers in 2001, and contested the seat in the 2004 state election as an independent with the support of federal independent MP Bob Katter. The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs).
