Pathways (album)
''Pathways'' is a live album by the Dave Holland Octet. The album was recorded live at New York City’s Birdland jazz club. The record was released on March 23, 2010 via Dare2 label. Reception The Allmusic review by Jeff Tamarkin awarded the album 4 stars, stating, "Holland uses those pieces, in particular, as launching pads for dynamic solo exhibits and inspired duets, but in the end it's not the dexterity of the individuals that impresses most, but rather the groupthink of the ensemble. ".Tamarkin JAllmusic Reviewaccessed April 29, 2013 George Varga writing for ''JazzTimes'' commented, "As Holland has done in virtually every one of his previous bands, he provides a platform for his Pathways colleagues to realize an individual and collective sense of purpose and cooperation. The resulting spirit of generosity, of selflessly yet emphatically serving each composition, pays off from start to finish on the seven-song album (five penned by Holland), which clocks in at over 75 minut ...

Chris Potter, Robin Eubanks and Steve Nelson all return from previous projects. This is the first Holland album not to be released on the ECM label, through which he had released all of his albums since '' Conference of the Birds'' in 1972. Reception Steve Greenlee of ''JazzTimes'' stated "It’s been five years since Dave Holland’s quintet released an album of new material. The bassist hasn’t exactly been relaxing in the meantime; he put out two albums of big-band music and toured extensively, and released a stellar double-live CD by his quintet. And all the while, the least grateful among us have been hankering for some new music from Holland’s quintet. Well, here it is, and it holds its own against Prime Directive, the group’s most impressive release... The groupthink mentality manifests itself most obviously on the New Orleans tribute “Easy ...

''Prime Directive'' is an album by jazz bassist Dave Holland's Quintet released on the ECM label in 1999. It features Holland with saxophonist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibraphonist Steve Nelson and drummer Billy Kilson. Holland was asked about the album’s title on the web site "Innerviews":It started with a conversation with my wife I had when we were just putting this band together. I had been in a few situations which were not really fun, but musically good. There were problems of one sort or another. I decided at this stage in my life that I wanted to enjoy music. I have to say one of the things that really influenced me is my time recently with Herbie Hancock. I’ve worked with him on and off from ’91 to ’96 in trio and quartet formats. Herbie enjoys himself whenever he plays. He has a lot of fun and it doesn’t stop him from being creative or playing amazingly inventively. That was when a sort of release occurred and a cognition formed. Unt ...
