Steve Hamra Medal
The Neil Kerley Medal (formerly known as the Trabilsie Medal and later the Steve Hamra Medal) is an Australian rules football award given to the player(s) from the West Adelaide Football Club deemed Best & Fairest for the season. West Adelaide play in the South Australian National Football League. In 2015, the WAFC board approved the change of the naming of the Best and Fairest Medallion as the Neil Kerley Medal to honour four time club B&F and two time premiership winner as a player and coach, Neil Kerley. Australian Rules Football
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. Throwing the ball is not allowed, and players must not get caught holding the ball. Dion Myles (born 2 May 1976) is a former Australian rules footballer who played in the Australian Football League (AFL) for the Sydney Swans between 1995 and 1997. Myles played eight games and kicked one goal for Sydney, debuting against Brisbane in round 18, 1995 and playing his final game against Carlton in round 21, 1997. Ian Borchard
Ian Alfred Borchard (born 5 August 1957) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1970s. He also played for West Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Playing career VFL Borchard, originally from Swan Hill in Victoria, spent three seasons at Richmond. In the last of those years, 1978, Borchard was cleared to play for South Fremantle in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL) midway through the season, but only lasted one week before he returned to Richmond on 29 June. SANFL He joined West Adelaide in 1979 and the following season won the first of his two Best & Fairest awards, the other coming in 1982. Des Herbert
Desmond John Herbert (born 15 March 1959) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood and Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Herbert, who had to make his way up through the thirds, was a member of the Collingwood team that lost the 1979 reserves grand final to North Melbourne. In 1980 he made five senior appearances, late in the season, but lost his place in the team before the finals. He played a further three games in 1981 before being transferred to Fitzroy mid-season, along with Leigh Carlson and Matthew McClelland, in return for Warwick Irwin. His seven games for Fitzroy that year consisted of two finals, including their dramatic one-point loss to his former club in the semi-finals. Kieran Sporn
Kieran Sporn (born 28 August 1966) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with and in the Australian Football League (AFL) from 1989-94. Career Originally from South Australia where he played for South Australian National Football League (SANFL) club West Adelaide, winning the club's Sam Suckling Medal as the best first year player in 1986, and the club Best & Fairest in 1987. Sporn moved to Melbourne in 1989 to play for VFL team Essendon. He played 19 consecutive games during his debut season before a knee injury ending the streak. He played five seasons for Essendon, then one season for Fitzroy in 1994, before retiring. Neville Shaw
Neville William Shaw (born 4 October 1964) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Shaw, a Keon Park Stars recruit, was the youngest of three brothers to play for Collingwood. Ray Shaw, 10 years older, had finished his Collingwood career by the time Neville came to the club but he did get to play with his other brother Tony. Not picked for the opening two rounds of the 1984 season, Shaw made his debut against Essendon at Windy Hill and was a regular fixture for the rest of the year, with his only stint on the sidelines being because of a two-week suspension, for striking Hawthorn's Russell Shields. Grantley Fielke
Grantley Craig Fielke (born 18 March 1962 in Loxton, South Australia) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for West Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), and the Collingwood Football Club and Adelaide Football Club in the Victorian/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL). League career Fielke was recruited by the West Adelaide Football Club from their South Australian country zone of the Riverland in 1977 at the age of 15. Peter Banfield
Peter Charles Banfield (born 21 January 1965) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for and the Brisbane Bears in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1980s, and with in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) during the early 1990s. Playing career Banfield was recruited from North Ringwood made his way into the Essendon team having played under-19s football at the club. He participated in the Essendon reserves 1983 premiership and after being unable to establish himself in the seniors, won a PIE Best & Fairest in 1986. When he did make it into the VFL side, 11 times in total, Essendon won all their games. Brisbane picked up Banfield for their first ever VFL season in 1987 and he took part in their inaugural appearance in Round 1 starting in the back pocket. Mark Mickan
Mark James Mickan (born 30 January 1961) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Brisbane Bears and Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Mickan began his senior career with South Australian National Football League (SANFL) club in 1981 and finished back at West Adelaide in 1994. All-Australian team selection in 1988 marked the pinnacle of his playing career. He has a sister, Patricia Mickan, who was a basketballer. He coached SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens in 1998 and 1999, Glenelg for five and half years from 2006 to June 2011, and West Adelaide from 2014 to 2017.
