Friedrich Wilhelm Von Steuben
Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand von Steuben (born Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin Louis von Steuben; September 17, 1730 – November 28, 1794), also referred to as Baron von Steuben (), was a Prussian military officer who played a leading role in the American Revolutionary War by reforming the Continental Army into a disciplined and professional fighting force. His contributions marked a significant improvement in the performance of US troops, and he is subsequently regarded as one of the fathers of the United States Army. Born into a military family, Steuben was exposed to war from an early age; at 14 years old, he observed his father directing Prussian engineers in the 1744 siege of Prague. At age 16 or 17, he enlisted in the Prussian Army, which was considered the most professional and disciplined in Europe. USS ''Von Steuben'' (SSBN-632), a fleet ballistic missile submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben (1730–1794), a Prussian army officer who served in the American Revolutionary War. Kuno Von Steuben
Kuno Arndt von Steuben (Eisenach, 9 April 1855 – Berlin, 14 January 1935) was a Prussian military officer, and a general in the First World War. Life He was born in a noble family, of which Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben (1730–1794) is best known. He joined the Prussian Army at the age of 13. By 1911 he commanded the 36th Division as lieutenant general. In 1913 he was director of the Prussian Military Academy. Moltke had asked Kaiser for his promotion to General der Infanterie. Steuben was promoted on 19 August 1914, shortly after the beginning of World War I. At the outbreak of the war, he received command of the XVIII Reserve Corps. His corps was part of 4th Army, commanded by Albrecht, Duke of Württemberg, on the march to the Marne river. It saw action in the Battle of the Ardennes, the Second Battle of Champagne and the Battle of Verdun. Fritz Steuben
Erhard Wittek (3 December 1898 – 4 June 1981), better known for his pen name Fritz Steuben, was a German author who wrote war novels and stories depicting American Indians (particularly the life of the Shawnee chief Tecumseh). Steuben wrote war novels based on personal experiences in World War I (especially "Durchbruch anno achtzehn. Ein Fronterlebnis" Stuttgart:Franckh, 1933) and other novels under his birth name. Biography Steuben was born in Wongrowitz, Province of Posen. He participated in World War I. After the war he started as a book-seller apprentice and became finally head of production in the publishing house Franckh-Kosmos in Stuttgart. From 1929 until 1952 Steuben wrote stories on American Indians under his pseudonym. The eight volumes of his Tecumseh anthology follow the Shawnee chief Tecumseh from his childhood to his death. Charles Auguste Guillaume Steuben (April 18, 1788 – November 21, 1856), also Charles de Steuben, was a German-born French Romantic painter and lithographer active during the Napoleonic Era. Early life De Steuben was born the son of the Duke of Württemberg officer Carl Hans Ernst von Steuben. At the age of twelve he moved with his father, who entered Russian service as a captain, to Saint Petersburg, where he studied drawing at the Art Academy classes as a guest student. Steuben Glass Works
Steuben Glass is an American art glass manufacturer, founded in the summer of 1903 by Frederick Carder and Thomas G. Hawkes in Corning, New York, which is in Steuben County, from which the company name was derived. Hawkes was the owner of the largest cut glass firm then operating in Corning. Carder was an Englishman (born September 18, 1863) who had many years' experience designing glass for Stevens & Williams in England. Hawkes purchased the glass blanks for his cutting shop from many sources and eventually wanted to start a factory to make the blanks himself. Hawkes convinced Carder to come to Corning and manage such a factory. Carder, who had been passed over for promotion at Stevens and Williams, consented to do so. In 1918, Steuben was acquired by Corning Glass Works and became the Steuben Division. Service history Completed too late for service in World War II, ''LST-1138'' performed occupation duty in the Far East until early January 1946. After post-war operations with the Pacific Fleet, ''LST-1138'' saw extensive service during the Korean War, including the 1950 amphibious assault at Inchon, and a Korean prisoner exchange in 1953.
