Stettler is a town in east-central Alberta, Canada that is surrounded by the County of Stettler No. 6. The town is nicknamed "The Heart of Alberta". History Stettler was founded in 1905 and was named after Swiss immigrant Carl Stettler, who also founded a settlement east of the town at Blumenau, as well as being influential in the nearby community of Castor. He also served on the first Town Council of Stettler. Geography Climate Stettler experiences a humid continental climate (Köppen climate classification ''Dfb''). Martha Stettler
Adelheid Fanny Martha Stettler (25 September 1870 – 16 December 1945) was a Swiss painter and engraver. She was one of the founders of the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, and was co-principal of the school from 1909 until 1945. Biography Martha Stettler was born in Bern. Her father, Eugen Stettler, was an architect who gave her early instruction in drawing. In 1893, after studying art in Bern and Geneva, she went to Paris, where she attended the Académie Julian. She studied with Luc-Olivier Merson from 1893 to 1898 and became a student of Lucien Simon in 1899. The Académie de la Grande Chaumière, of which Stettler was a co-founder, had its origin in a group of art students. Simon, Antoine Bourdelle, and Émile-René Ménard were among the school's early instructors. Stettler and her partner and fellow artist Alice Dannenberg were the directors of the school from 1909 to 1945. He won a bronze medal in the four-man event at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. Carl Stettler
Carl Stettler (June 6, 1861 – February 1, 1920) was a Swiss-Canadian farmer, businessman and postmaster, after whom the town of Stettler, Alberta is named. Stettler was born at Eggiwil near Bern, Switzerland, on June 6, 1861. He moved from Switzerland to the U.S. in 1886. After travelling and working across the U.S., he arrived in Alberta, Canada, in 1903 and bought a ''Dominion Lands Act'' homestead plot two-and-a-half miles east of the present town of Stettler, Alberta. He founded and was the first postmaster of the Swiss and German colony of Blumenau, Alberta in 1905. In the same year, the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) required moving the entire town of Blumenau to the Stettler site. Stettler became postmaster of the new town, was a CPR land agent there, and the town was named in his honour. He was a member of the first Town Council of Stettler.
