Sternberg General Hospital or Department Hospital, Manila P was a United States Military Hospital in Manila in the Philippines during the early part of the 20th century. The hospital was renamed after George Miller Sternberg on June 26, 1920. George Miller Sternberg
Brigadier General George Miller Sternberg (June 8, 1838 – November 3, 1915) was a U.S. Army physician who is considered the first U.S. bacteriologist, having written ''Manual of Bacteriology'' (1892). After he survived typhoid and yellow fever, Sternberg documented the cause of malaria (1881), discovered the cause of lobar pneumonia (1881), and confirmed the roles of the bacilli of tuberculosis and typhoid fever (1886). As the 18th U.S. Army Surgeon General, from 1893 to 1902, Sternberg led commissions to control typhoid and yellow fever, along with his subordinate Major Walter Reed. Sternberg also oversaw the establishment of the Army Medical School (1893; now the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research) and of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps (1901). Inez Haynes
Inez Haynes (June 3, 1909 May 29, 1997) was the 10th director of the United States Army Nurse Corps from October 1, 1955 until August 31, 1959. Early life Haynes was born the first childe of Floyd Haynes and Lola Rampey Haynes on June 3, 1909 in Paint Rock, Texas. After graduating from Mills High School, she attended a nursing school at Scott and White Hospital. She began nursing in 1932 when she was commissioned in the Army Nurse Corps Reserve. After coming on active duty in 1933, becoming an operations room nurse at Fort Sam Houston and Sternburg General Hospital. Immediately before and during World War II, her overseas assignments included service in the Philippines, the Pacific, and Japan. She served as the nursing chief of the First Army Area. Under her tenure as Chief, the Corps received its first male nurses, members of the Army Nurse Corps Reserve, and for the first time Army Nurse Corps officers were assigned to airborne divisions. SS Mactan (1898)
SS ''Mactan'' was launched 28 December 1898 as the passenger/cargo ship ''North Lyell'' for North Mount Lyell Copper Co.Ltd. intended for service between the west coast of Tasmania and Melbourne. The company no longer needed the ship on delivery in 1899 with resulting sale to Union Steamship Company of New Zealand Ltd. and renaming as ''Moura''. In 1915 upon sale to the Douglas Steamship Company, Ltd. of Hong Kong she was renamed ''Hai Hong''. Upon sale to Philippine operators in 1928 the ship gained the final name ''Mactan''. Map of Manila, Naval Base Manila is at Cavite in Manila Bay Naval Base Manila, Naval Air Base Manila was a major United States Navy base south of the City of Manila, on Luzon Island in the Philippines. Some of the bases dates back to 1898, the end of the Spanish–American War. Starting in 1938 civilian contractors were used to build new facilities in Manila to prepare for World War II. Work stopped on December 23, 1941, when Manila was declared not defendable against the Empire of Japan southward advance, which took over the city on January 2, 1942, after the US declared it an open city. US Navy construction and repair started in March 1945 with the taking of Manila in the costly Battle of Manila ending on March 2, 1945.
