Sterling S. McColgin
Sterling Simison McColgin (June 14, 1901 – October 26, 1963) was an American farmer and politician. McColgin was born in Ashkum, Illinois. He owned a farm between Cheyenne, Oklahoma and Reydon, Oklahoma. He served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives from 1947 to 1951 and from 1953 to 1955 and the Oklahoma Senate from 1955 to 1963 when he died while still in office. McColgin was a Democrat. McColgin also served as mayor of Reydon, Oklahoma. McColgin died suddenly in Cheyenne, Oklahoma while buying feed for his cattle at a feed store. His mother Bessie S. Ashkum is a village in Ashkum Township, Iroquois County, Illinois, United States. The population was 761 at the 2010 census. Origin of name The name originated from Chief Ashkum of the Potawatomi people. Geography Ashkum is located in northwestern Iroquois County at (40.881356, -87.952172). U.S. Route 45 passes through the village, leading east then north to Kankakee, and south to Gilman. Illinois Route 116 leads west from Ashkum to Pontiac. Interstate 57 crosses IL-116 at Exit 293 just west of Ashkum; it leads north to Kankakee and to Chicago, while to the south it leads to Champaign. Cheyenne, Oklahoma
Cheyenne is a town in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 801 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Roger Mills County. History Cheyenne is the location of the Battle of Washita River (also called Battle of the Washita; Washita Battlefield; Washita Massacre), where George Armstrong Custer's 7th U.S. Cavalry attacked the sleeping Cheyenne village of Black Kettle on the Washita River on November 26, 1868. Cheyenne has been a county seat since 1895. But construction of the nearest railroad into the area, the Clinton and Oklahoma Western Railway ("C&OW") terminated in 1912 at Strong City, and that township was laid out with a rocky knoll in the center reserved for the County Courthouse should Strong City become the county seat instead of Cheyenne. Reydon, Oklahoma
Reydon is a town in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma, United States. Reydon was established in 1928 after the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway put down rails in the area, purchased land from local farmers, and laid out a townsite. The site was two miles north of a settlement called Rankin, and Rankin merchants moved to the site because of the rail connection. However, the name “Rankin” was considered confusing because Rankin, Texas was also along the railline. So the town was named Reydon instead, either in honor of a railroad executive in Chicago, or in honor of the village of Reydon in Suffolk County, England. The population of the town peaked at 331 in 1950. In December 2003 the New York Times featured Reydon on the front page, in an article regarding dwindling small towns on the Great Plains. The Legislature of the State of Oklahoma is the state legislative branch of the U.S. state of Oklahoma.
