Sterling High School (Houston)
Ross Shaw Sterling High School, also known as Sterling Aviation High School, is a secondary school located in Houston, Texas. Sterling, which serves grades 9 through 12, is a part of the Houston Independent School District. The school was named after Ross S. Sterling. Sterling has Houston ISD's magnet program for Aviation Sciences. History Ross S. Sterling High School opened as a junior/senior high school (grades 7–12) in the fall of 1965. This unique, three-building campus featured designed-in air-conditioning which was a new, yet essential, feature for HISD facilities. The Sterling campus had a mirror twin sister campus, James Madison Jr./Senior High School, that opened at the same time as Sterling. The first principal of Sterling was A.P. South Park is a broad post-World War II development in the south-central area of Houston, Texas, a few miles south of MacGregor Park and directly south of the Interstate 610 (Texas), 610 Loop. According to the 2000 Census, the community has a population of 22,282. 81% of the South Park population is African American, compared to 25% for the city as a whole. Houston's List of streets named after Martin Luther King Jr.#Texas, Martin Luther King Boulevard (formerly South Park Boulevard) runs through the area. Houston Defender
The ''Houston Defender'' is an African-American newspaper published weekly in Houston, Texas. The newspaper was established October 11, 1930 by C. F. Richardson Sr., who was also publisher of the ''Houston Informer''. The Defender served as a community advocate in the pre-Civil Rights era with a focus on equal rights, improved high school curricula and anti-lynching laws. Richardson died in 1939, and his son, C. F. Richardson Jr., took over the newspaper. Sonceria MessiahJiles purchased the newspaper in 1981. The 2008 readership was 60,000. In 1993 the bi-monthly ''Campus Defender'' was created for a younger audience; its contributors are middle and high school students. The publication moved online in 2008. Stephen Pool Waltrip High School is a public high school located at 1900 West 34th Street in Houston, Texas, United States, 77018. Waltrip, which serves grades 9 through 12, is a part of the Houston Independent School District. Waltrip has Houston ISD's Research and Technology magnet program. The school's namesake is a former principal at the defunct Houston Heights High School, who transferred to Reagan High School (now renamed Heights High School) after that school replaced the original Houston Heights High. Andrew Carnegie Vanguard High School, named after Andrew Carnegie, is located in the Fourth Ward of Houston, Texas near Downtown and was formerly located near Sunnyside.
