Steppin' Out (Joan Armatrading Album)
''Steppin' Out'' is a live album by the British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading. The title is taken from her song of the same name which was first released in 1975 on her second studio album ''Back to the Night''. A DVD with the same title, containing concerts recorded by '' WDR'' in 1979 and 1980, was released in 2004. Background The album was recorded live during the North American leg of her '' To the Limit'' tour and released in the UK in October 1979 by A&M (AMLH 64789). It was also released in Canada and Europe but not in the US. This is said to be because, although Armatrading was enjoying success in the States, it was felt she did not sell enough recordings there to justify a live album. However, a US issue of the album was released on CD in 2006 as a limited edition. Joan Anita Barbara Armatrading, (, born 9 December 1950) is a Kittitian-English singer-songwriter and guitarist. A three-time Grammy Award nominee, Armatrading has also been nominated twice for BRIT Awards as Best Female Artist. She received an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996. In a recording career spanning nearly 50 years, Armatrading has released 20 studio albums, as well as several live albums and compilations. Don Michael "Red" Young is an American keyboard, piano, synthesizer and organ player. Beginnings and early success He grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, United States. He began playing piano at age 3 and did his first classical recital at age 8. He toured with Clyde McCoy (Sugar Blues) in 1967, Air Force Band 1968–72 and 1974 joined Lloyd Price (Stagger Lee, Personality) for a brief tour returning to Ft Worth where he joined Warren and Bill Ham, Darryl Norris and formed the Ham Brothers Band. "Down to Zero" is a 1976 song by British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading. It features pedal steel guitar by B. J. Cole and drums by Kenney Jones of the Faces. History The song first appeared on Armatrading's 1976 album ''Joan Armatrading'', which was produced and engineered by Glyn Johns and recorded at the independent Olympic Studios in Barnes, London. It was the first song to be recorded for the album. "Down to Zero" was released as a single, also in 1976, by A&M ''("Down to Zero/Like Fire" – AMS 7270)'', and despite following the success of the top ten single " Love and Affection" (which had been released in August 1976), it failed to chart. ''The Key'' is the eighth studio album by the British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading, released on 28 February 1983 by A&M Records (AMLX64912). The album was recorded at Townhouse Studios in Shepherd's Bush, London; Polar Studios in Stockholm and also in New York. The album spawned the single "Drop the Pilot", which became one of Armatrading's biggest hits, reaching number 11 in the UK Singles Chart over a 10-week stay. It also quickly became a staple of Armatrading's live performances and has featured on many of her compilation albums. Armatrading and her backing band also performed the song on ''Top of the Pops'' in early 1983. The Grugahalle is a multi-purpose indoor arena located at the edge of the Botanischer Garten Grugapark in Essen, Germany. Opened on 25 October 1958, its seating capacity is about 7,700 people and about 10,000 for unseated events. The building was heritage-listed in 2000.
